Training Your Companion Pet ? Dogs, by Tracy Robinson | Whole ...

When a puppy is first born, a significant portion of their brain cells are not wired together.?? Most cellular connections are formed between the ages of 4 weeks and 4 months.? This time in your puppy?s life is critical in socializing your dog.? When they get older, it is harder to change the wiring.? When your puppy is still with its mother and litter mates, is when they start learning how to play nice.? When puppies get to be 5 weeks old,? they start interacting with humans.? It is critical they are handled with love and kindness.? Around the age of 8 weeks is when puppies start developing fear.? This is the cause of most dog bites, bringing back the point of kindness and love in handling.? At about 12 weeks they start formulating their dominance and personalities.? They are starting to focus on people and this is an excellent time to start training.?? When dogs are un-socialized they become more stressed and bite out of fear.? Keep in mind the different genetics of dogs in their fear level and temperament.? If you are not sure of the temperament, there are tests by professionals that can be done.

Anytime you work with your puppy make sure their experiences are safe, positive and fun.??? Give them a lot of variety so they don?t get bored and a lot of praise.? Healthy, nutritious training treats are excellent rewards. ?You want to make sure your dogs diet is made of wholesome ingredients.? Food and treats made with high fructose, sugar and corn syrup can make your dog aggressive when it is not their fault.?? Try to take your puppy or dog with you where ever you go, exposing them to as many people and animals as possible.? The more interaction with varieties of experiences the better.? Expose them to as many sights and sounds as possible and make sure they feel safe.? If your puppy gets afraid, slow down and re-assure them.? Let them learn at their own comfort level.? Socialization is vital to your puppy being a happy, well adjusted dog.?? Keep all training positive and consistent.? Abuse as a way of training will damage not only the pet but the pet?s relationship with its owner. ?Be sure to set boundaries for appropriate behavior though.? Pets don?t think like humans but many humans treat their pets as if they do think alike.

Along with positive reinforcement, keep your pet safe by keeping them on a leash, etc.? Never let your dogs ride in the back of pickups.? They can jump out and it gets extremely hot in the back.?? They can burn their paws on the hot trunk bed, they can get heat stroke and they can get sun burned. Make sure you keep car windows down for air, try to park in a shaded area and give them a lot of water if they are left in the car.? When it is really hot outside and you will be leaving your car, leave them at home with a lot of food, shade and water, or inside your air conditioned house.? So they don?t get anxious when you leave them alone at home, start by leaving for short periods of time, even a few minutes, and increase the timing as they get comfortable.? Dogs pick up on your attitude.? When you leave them at home, be calm when you leave, like it is no big deal and praise them when you leave and return.? Be sure they have plenty of food, water and shade.? If you leave them in the house, make sure the air conditioner is on or anything else that will make them comfortable.
