Clinton's blood clot located in her head; full recovery expected

(Reuters/Kevin Lamarque)(Reuters/Kevin Lamarque)

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is "making excellent progress" recovering from a blood clot discovered during a medical examination, her doctors said Monday. But Clinton remains hospitalized until a proper medication is established, they said.

A day after announcing that Clinton had been admitted to a New York hospital for treatment of a blood clot related to a concussion she sustained, State Department spokesman Philippe Reines on Monday released a statement from Drs. Lisa Bardack and Gigi El-Bayoumi offering further detail on? Clinton's condition and how it was first diagnosed.

"In the course of a routine follow-up MRI on Sunday, the scan revealed that a right transverse sinus venous thrombosis had formed. This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage," the statement said.

To help dissolve this clot, her medical team began treating the Secretary with blood thinners. She will be released once the medication dose has been established," the statement continued. "In all other aspects of her recovery, the Secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery. She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family, and her staff."

In mid-December, the State Department announced Clinton had suffered a concussion after fainting at home. She has not been seen publicly for several weeks, but was scheduled to return to work shortly.

Clinton is expected to step down from her post later in January. President Barack Obama has name Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry as his choice to succeed Clinton.

Jane Goodall to promote conservation as Rose Parade grand marshal

The Rose Parade is Pasadena's premier event, but its 2013 grand marshal admits she learned about it only after receiving her title.

"When you grow up in England and spend all your time in Tanzania ... I hadn't heard of the Rose Parade," Jane Goodall said. "It was only gradually that I realized what a big honor it is."

Goodall is perhaps best known for setting up shop in 1960 in what is now Tanzania to conduct what would become groundbreaking research on wild chimpanzees. Now 78, she remains focused on issues involving conservation, crisscrossing the globe to visit schools and give lectures.

FULL COVERAGE: 2013 Rose Parade

Tuesday's Rose Parade will be a "wonderful way" to share her mission, Goodall said, given the tens of thousands of people who watch the annual event along the streets of Pasadena and on television.

"It's an opportunity to send a message to many people who might not hear it otherwise," Goodall said. "I think they'll be quite a few people who might have heard of me but might not think about the message I have."

That message, Goodall explained, is simple.

"It's up to us to save some of these amazing places that our children today can go to for the future," she said. "Millions and millions of people making the right choices for the future is going to lead to the kind of change we need."

Goodall's global nonprofit, the Jane Goodall Institute, and its youth-focused Roots & Shoots program are promoting individual projects in conjunction with the parade, asking viewers to do things such as donate old clothing, take steps to reduce household waste and spend time outside. Goodall will also use the parade to spotlight animals in need, and she will be accompanied by a "lovely, beautiful dog" available for adoption.

Tournament of Roses President Sally Bixby called Goodall's background "a testament to the sense of adventure and openness to possibility" represented by the parade's theme, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"

"The theme can be interpreted as a celebration of accomplishment, discovery and travel, of course, but equally valid is its implicit call to action," Bixby said in a statement. "Dr. Goodall is now an international icon, but it is her passion for discovery and how she has used her celebrity for the betterment of the world that has drawn us to her."

Past grand marshals include celebrities (Shirley Temple Black, Bill Cosby, John Wayne), former presidents (Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Dwight Eisenhower) and frogs (Kermit). Iraq war veteran and "Dancing With the Stars" winner J.R. Martinez led the 2012 Rose Parade; Southern cooking queen Paula Deen was grand marshal the year before.

"It's an honor and a fascinating list," Goodall said.

Goodall has turned to another former grand marshal for advice, consulting former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor (2006) about the coin flip that will start the Rose Bowl game.

Goodall said she was nervous about the toss ? and apparently O'Connor could relate.

"She said, 'Oh, I was terrified,' " Goodall said.

Coin tosses aside, Goodall said she is looking forward to her time in Southern California. Her family will be in town for the festivities, and she's scheduled to give a lecture Friday in San Pedro with Betty White and Tippi Hedren, fellow animal activists.

"It's a bit chaotic," Goodall said of her schedule. "This Rose Parade is quite something, isn't it?"

?Gangnam Style? singer Psy buys LA condo

10 hrs.

This week in celebrity real estate, Korean singer Psy bought a condo in Los Angeles and Derek Jeter eyed a Chelsea condo in Manhattan.

Korean star Psy buys LA condo
How do you buy a condo ?Gangnam Style??

Pay for it in cash.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Korean pop star Psy bought a condo in the exclusive Blair House on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles for $1.249 million and paid for it in cold-hard cash.

Psy was already a phenomenon in Korea before his catchy song ?Gangnam Style? made its way to America via YouTube. The video has been viewed over a billion times and parodied nearly as much. Psy signed a record deal with Scooter Braun, (the manager for Justin Bieber), in early September, and with this Westwood home purchase, it looks like his transition to American fame is complete.

The glassy and modern condo measures 2,776 square feet on one of the lower floors of the Blair, a luxury building constructed in 1989. Psy?s unit features large windows and modern fixtures.

Apartment-less Derek Jeter eyes Chelsea duplex for 2013 season
Derek Jeter needs a place to live in Manhattan!

This seems inevitable, after Jeter sold his luxury East Side apartment in October for a cool $15.5 million. The Yankees shortstop was looking to downsize, so he dumped his 5,400-square-foot Trump World Tower penthouse at 845 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017.

Now the hobbled Yankees captain is said to be pondering a rental in one of the hottest neighborhoods in all of Manhattan: Chelsea.

According to The Real Deal, the 38-year-old future Hall of Fame inductee has his eyes on a 5-bedroom, 4-bath unit in the Chelsea Quarter Condominium building.

If this 4,000-square-foot duplex sounds like downsizing, well, remember that Jeter is the man with a 30,000-square-foot custom home in Tampa.

No matter where the even-tempered star lands, he?s going to need an elevator. Jeter is still mending from an ankle break suffered during the American League playoffs in October.

Recruitment To Begin For Green Investment Bank Jobs

(PRWEB UK) 12 March 2012

Recruitment is set to start for up to 70 new financial jobs at the new government-backed Green Investment Bank (GIB).

It was announced last week that the banks operations would be split between two sites in London and Edinburgh, and that it is hoped to be fully operational by the coming Autumn.

The development of the bank is being led by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), with the aim of providing financial solutions for private sector investment in the green economy.

Business secretary, Vince Cable, said that decision to split the bank between the two locations would serve to open it up to wider markets. The London operation will largely deal with the fundraising aspect of the bank.

He explained, This decision will allow the UK GIB to operate effectively and achieve its mission of mobilising the additional investment needed to accelerate the UKs transition to a green economy.

Scottish secretary, Michael Moore, said that Edinburgh and London had both come out at the top of the extensive technical assessments carried out to determine the location of the new company.

By basing the GIB?s corporate HQ, asset management and administrative functions in Edinburgh and its transaction team in London, we can harness expertise across the country to deliver a strong and successful GIB for the UK, he said.

AP Source: McCoy, Hicks suspended by Texas

Texas has sent home backup quarterback Case McCoy and injured linebacker Jordan Hicks on the eve of the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio for violating team rules, a person with knowledge of the suspensions told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Friday because the school wasn't releasing the names of the suspended players. The person said the players broke curfew.

Coach Mack Brown addressed the situation during a previously schedule news conference Friday and referred to a KENS-TV report (http://tinyurl.com/cw8dcj3) that police were investigating two unidentified Texas players in an alleged sexual assault at a San Antonio hotel.

"This has been reported: We had a couple young men that broke team rules last night. They have been suspended from the team and they will be sent home," Brown said at a previously scheduled news conference in San Antonio. "They will not be available for the game and I will not address any more questions in that matter."

Sgt. Javier Salazar, a San Antonio police spokesman, said only that detectives are in the early stages of investigating a case of alleged sexual assault in the downtown area. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence, he said.

"It's a very meticulous process," Salazar said. "As far as these investigations go, it's very early."

A heavily-redacted police report says a 21-year-old woman told police she believed she was assaulted around 2 a.m. Friday after inviting two men to her hotel room. The report shows only that the men are students and that one is 21 and the other is 20. The woman told police that she had had several drinks when she invited the men to her hotel.

The woman said one of the men assaulted her while the other "just stood there and watched," the report said. Police said they observed bruises on the woman's right knee and left bicep.

After talking to police, the woman was taken to a San Antonio hospital, where she was seen by a sexual assault nurse examiner, according to the report. The two suspects also were taken to the hospital and examined by the nurse, the report says.

Ben Turner, acting general manager at the Holiday Inn on San Antonio's Riverwalk, said police were summoned to the hotel between 2 and 3 a.m. Friday to investigate an alleged sexual assault. He said hotel staff was cooperating with police.

McCoy, the brother of former Texas star and current Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, has played eight games this season, including one start. He has thrown for 722 yards and six touchdowns.

Hicks was a starter but hasn't played since the third game of the season because of a hip injury.

Texas (8-4) plays Oregon State (9-3) in Saturday's game at the Alamodome. The Longhorns' walk-through at the stadium Friday afternoon was closed to the media.

Press is a Gorgeous Newsreader for Android Phones and Tablets

Press is a Gorgeous Newsreader for Android Phones and TabletsPress is a Gorgeous Newsreader for Android Phones and Tablets Android: If you're a fan of Reeder for OS X and iOS, but wish Android had a similar newsreader, congratulations: Press is the app you've been waiting for. The developer takes more than a few design cues from Reeder, and that's a really good thing.

Press connects and syncs with Google Reader. After launching, let it sync, and the app displays all of your feeds as tiles or as a list that you can browse through. Tap a specific feed to read articles from it, or read all of your unread articles at once. In portrait mode, you can swipe from side to side to move from article list to article text, and in landscape mode you can zoom in on article text or images. On tablets, you can see a list of stories on the left, and tap them to change the text on the right.

At any time, you can hit the menu key or button in the upper right to open the article in your browser, share it with friends, mark it as read, star it to read later, and more. The app supports offline reading and lets you control text size and font, so you get the reading experience you want.

Granted, it's not as feature-packed as some of your other favorite newsreaders, and some people report crashing issues with it (which we didn't have when we tested it.) Still, if you're looking for an elegant, gesture-friendly way to get Google Reader onto your Android phone or tablet, it's definitely worth the $1.99 you'll pay to download it.

Hands-on with Jolla's Sailfish OS (video)

Handson with Jolla's Sailfish OS video

We recently had the chance to spend time with David Greaves and Vesa-Matti Hartikainen of Jolla and take Sailfish OS for a spin. As you might recall, this open source mobile OS builds upon Mer (a fork of MeeGo that includes Qt) and uses the Nemo framework with a custom UI. Like any decent Linux-based OS, it supports both ARM and x86 devices. The company is also behind the Sailfish SDK which is in the process of being finalized but is still open to developer feedback (the source code is available). After seeing Jolla's various demo videos and noting some UI similarities with MeeGo (swipes) and, strangely, with BB10 (peek gestures), we were eager to experience Sailfish OS for ourselves.

If you're wondering why the mobile OS is usually shown running on Nokia's N950 developer handset, that's because Jolla employs many ex-MeeGo engineers, so the OMAP-based phone was a natural fit. We were first given a walkthrough of Sailfish OS, then allowed to play with it. Many apps are still being worked on and some are still off-limits (we got in trouble for launching the camera), but what we saw was pretty solid. Take a look at the gallery below, then hit the break for our hands-on video and first impressions.

Baldness and common treatments - ArticlesWide.com

The first step in treating baldness is to perform a detailed evaluation of the scalp and analyze the causes that may be responsible for the condition. An experienced hair surgeon will first explore the possibility of any reversible medical condition that may have resulted in the baldness. If such a cause is identified, an appropriate treatment plan must be made to eliminate the root cause of the problem.

However, if no specific reversible condition that may be causing baldness is identified, the doctor may recommend one of the available medical therapies or hair transplant surgery. Some of the popular FDA-approved medical treatments include Rogaine, Propecia and low level light treatment. Rogaine is a topical treatment that must be applied twice a day. Propecia is taken in the pill form once a day. Low level light therapy is performed under medical supervision two times per week.

These medical treatments are successful in the short-term and manage to reverse the rapidly increasing baldness. Sometimes they may even result in new hair growth in the balding areas. However, the limitation of these therapies is that as soon as the treatment is stopped, the condition of hair loss resumes. Therefore, the only truly effective and permanent solution to the problem is baldness is hair transplant surgery. Most satisfactory results have been achieved with this surgery for a vast majority of patients who choose to undergo the procedure.

Hair transplant surgery is primarily performed in two ways, which include Follicular Hair Extraction (FUE) and Strip Hair Transplant surgery.

Both procedures have their own advantages and limitations, but it's optimal results for baldness http://baldness.webs.com/

The key to success in both cases is how the hair surgeon approaches the problem and what treatment plan he or she devises to restore the patients hair in a natural looking way.Male baldness doesn't have to affect you unless you let it. Biotin and Saw Palmetto are but just a couple of proven natural hair loss treatments. Why spend hundreds of dollars searching for male baldness cures when you can find them from natural substances?Massage scalp. Lack of blood circulation in your hair follicles can be a reason for hair loss. By massaging thinning areas of the scalp, you are increasing blood flow and promoting growth of your hair. It's well known that the typical junk food diet enjoyed by Western societies is causing a serious obesity problem, and that degenerative disorders like heart disease, hypertension and diabetes also have a big connection with this type of diet.

How Well Is Your Contact Form Working for You? ? Firmology ...

?

01-contact-form

photo credit: Subharnab via photo pin cc

If you own a website, you likely have a place on your site where visitors can fill in their contact information and send you a message ? this is your contact form. As a small business owner, having a contact form is a necessity. Contact forms make it easy for your customers to ask a question or send in a comment. In fact, it may be the main source through which customers submit a complaint and in many cases, a contact form helps you avoid publishing an email address on your site.

Of course, there are certain features that all contact forms should have, especially if you want your form to help increase sales and business. Remember, the contact form is all about making it easy to get in touch with you, so keep that general principle in mind.

Important Components

The important components of the contact form include:

  • Name of individual (required)
  • Email (required)
  • Subject (optional)
  • Phone (optional)
  • Message (required)

Your contact form should be set up in a way that individuals who want to get in contact with you can type in their name and e-mail address so that after you receive their message, you can easily respond back to them and can even refer to them by name. The name, email, and message are the absolute minimum, but make it easier for them to provide a phone and subject if they want to.

The category section can be important because this is a way for the individual to choose the specific category that relates to the type of message they are sending. For example, they may have an inquiry or they may be providing feedback to you. The message section is, of course, most important. This section will be where they talk to you about whatever it is that they need. Often the category section is a drop-down box with several options from which customers can choose.

What NOT to Do

02-contact-form

photo credit: ?ick Harris via photo pin cc

Avoid using CAPTCHA or other human-checking gimmicks. This is a contact form, not a comment on a blog. Avoid any unneccesary steps with the contact form. The more hurdles you put in front of the customer, the less likely they will be to use the form at all. And don?t forget, sometimes those human-checking systems fail resulting in a frustrated customer.

Also do not forget about those mobile customers. The use of mobile devices for accessing websites is continually on the rise. Make sure your contact form can be used on any device, not just a desktop computer.

Other Considerations

In addition to the contact form, make a direct email and phone number by which customers can contact you, especially if your website is an ecommerce one. While the contact form can serve as a primary method of getting in touch, some customers feel much more comfortable picking up the phone or sending an email directly from their address.

Don?t just throw up any contact form. Make sure that it is catered to your ideal customer or client. Otherwise, you may end up losing conversions because prospects are too frustrated or intimidated to complete your form.

Genetic sequencing breakthrough to aid treatment for congenital hyperinsulinism

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Congenital hyperinsulinism is a genetic condition where a baby's pancreas secretes too much insulin. It affects approximately one in 50,000 live births and in severe cases requires the surgical removal of all or part of the pancreas.

Researchers at the University of Exeter Medical School are the first in the world to utilise new genetic sequencing technology to sequence the entirety of a gene in order to identify mutations that cause hyperinsulinism. Previously, existing technology limited such sequencing to only part of the coding regions of the gene which meant that some mutations were missed.

Using new Illumina genetic sequencing technology, the research team led by Professor Sian Ellard has discovered novel mutations that cause hyperinsulinism. Their findings are published December 27 2012, on-line by The American Journal of Human Genetics.

The outcome will be that some infants born with hyperinsulinism will require fewer investigations, because the new technology means that for many only one genetic test will be required to determine the extent of the condition in each child. It also means that clinicians will have more information at their fingertips to inform them about how much of the pancreas needs to be removed.

Approximately 50 per cent of patients with congenital hyperinsulinism require surgery, and of those half require the entire pancreas to be removed. Removal of the entire pancreas increases the risk of diabetes later in life, but if left undiagnosed and untreated hyperinsulinism can result in irreparable brain damage. Symptoms range from shakiness and tiredness to seizure and coma.

Dr. Sarah Flanagan, Research Fellow in Molecular Genetics at the University of Exeter Medical School said: "The potential provided by this new technology is important and exciting, because it allows us to investigate genetic coding in its entirety. This means that investigators can identify mutations that sit at the heart of any number of conditions where before they might have been missed. Aerobic vs Weight Training: Which is Better For Fat Loss (The Duke ...

A recent study from Duke University comparing aerobic versus weight training to see which is better for fat loss was one of the most publicized studies of the year (my in-box was bursting with emails from Burn the Fat readers sending me links and asking me, ?What do you think of this Tom? ?I think the researchers missed the mark when they concluded that ?Aerobic exercise is better than resistance training for weight and fat loss? ? Read on to find out why and see what the top trainers, best bodybuilders and hottest fitness models in the world really say is the ?best way to burn fat the fastest?

The press release headline said:

?Aerobic exercise trumps resistance training for weight and fat loss.?

The New York Daily News picked up the story and published this headline:

?Aerobic training may burn more fat than a combination of weights and aerobics.?

Medical News Today published this one:

?Aerobic exercise best way to burn fat, not weights.?

These were the messages getting passed all around the Internet, usually by people who clicked a ?retweet? or ?share? button and didn?t even read the entire research paper. But what did the study really tell us?

What?s better for fat loss: aerobics, weight training or both?

After reading the news blurbs, you might be ?led to believe that if your goal is fat loss, you should focus on aerobics like running or cycling, not resistance training. Although aerobics (aka cardio) is a proven way to help burn fat, I believe that saying, ?Aerobics alone is best? is sending the wrong message and taking us backwards into the dark ages of fitness.

After decades of being ignored or even shunned by the health and medical communities, and after an era of aerobics dominating the fitness scene, weight training finally got its due respect as a key element in a total fitness program, including for fat loss. ?In the strength and conditioning community, we were thrilled when institutions like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) finally added resistance training to their position statements.

We want to see that positive message continue to be spread widely to the public. Unfortunately, we still have researchers and the media running you around in circles: First recommending aerobic training only, then it was aerobics training plus resistance training, and now they?re saying it?s just aerobics again.

Confused? Trust me, they had it right at aerobics plus resistance training, especially when you look at the big picture and not just the body fat percentage alone. Strength training is the unsung hero in achieving total health and fitness.

Of course, the media loves stories like these because there is nothing better for getting attention than controversy and contradiction. While it?s important to keep an eye on new research and balance those academic findings with real world results, in this case, I don?t agree with all the conclusions of the study authors.

Study design

The study, known as STRIDE-AT/RT (Studies of a Targeted Risk Reduction Intervention Through Defined Exercise ? Aerobic and Resistance Training) was conducted at Duke University in North Carolina. In this randomized controlled trial, 211 test subjects were assigned to one of three groups:

1. Resistance training

2. Aerobic training, or

3. Aerobic plus resistance training

Aerobic training included treadmill, elliptical trainers or bicycle equivalent to 12 miles per week at 65% ? 80% of peak VO2. Resistance training included 3 days per week of weight training exercises for 3 sets of 8-12 reps. There was a ramp-up period with 1-2 sets during the first month. Exercises were not specified, but they covered all major muscle groups and workouts were supervised or confirmed.

These were the general findings:

  • All three groups lost fat mass and body fat percentage
  • The aerobic training group lost more total body mass (body weight) than the other two groups
  • The resistance training group increased lean body mass more than the other two groups (confirmed by body composition and thigh circumference measurements)
  • The resistance training group did not reduce body mass. Weight went up slightly. (However, body fat went down slightly. The lack of decrease in scale weight was due to an increase in lean mass).
  • The resistance training plus aerobic training group decreased body fat percentage and fat mass more than the other two groups.

Looking at these results, it actually appears as though the resistance training plus aerobic training group had the best fat loss results: Similar total body weight loss as the aerobic only group, but greater loss in body fat percentage and greater loss in body fat mass.

The researchers seem to discount this fact by qualifying their ?aerobics is best? conclusion based on time efficiency or what they believed was the most important outcome for health benefits.

However, the truth is ? and even Duke?s own press release didn?t mention this ? when you read the full research paper and analyze the actual change scores, NONE of the results of ANY group were very impressive?

These were the specific findings, by the numbers:

  • The aerobics only group (deemed ?most successful?), lost a mere 3.8 pounds of body weight and 3.6 pounds of fat in 8 months.
  • The resistance training group gained 2.3 pounds of lean body mass and lost?only .57 pounds of fat mass.
  • The aerobic plus resistance group lost 5.36 pounds of fat mass and gained 1.78 pounds of lean body mass. That looks like the winner to me for overall body composition improvement, but even that is nothing to get excited about.

Suppose the press release had said, ?Study shows that aerobic training produces almost 4 pounds of fat loss in 8 months,? or ?Aerobic training burns three-tenths of a pound more than aerobics plus resistance training.? Do you think there would have been so many headlines? Well, those are the numbers!?Why was there any buzz or hoopla about these study results at all?

With proper program design, shouldn?t you be able to lose a lot more than 4 pounds in 8 months? In fact, since this study was conducted on overweight and obese subjects, wouldn?t you have expected more weight loss than average? ?(Isn?t it common to see an obese person lose 4 pounds of bodyweight in the first week?) Regardless of your starting point, if your goal is fat loss, would you be happy with less than 4 pounds for 8 months of effort?

Why the poor results? There are many possible explanations.

For one, we don?t have that many specifics about the program design, progression or energy expended from the weight training workouts. The exercises may have been all low-energy expenditure machine movements like leg extensions. There may have been?poor application of progression and periodiziation. And in the aerobic group, the volume and/or intensity of training may may not have been enough.

Diet: The crucial (missing?) element

More than likely, one of the biggest reasons for less fat loss and weight loss than you?d want or expect in 8 months is lack of tight control over the subject?s diets.

A cursory skimming of the study suggests that they did have the subjects report their food intake. However, ?a closer look at the full text shows it was done with 3-day food records and 24-hour food recalls. It?s a well-proven fact that self-reporting of food intake by research subjects is horribly unreliable. A lack of weight loss can very often be chalked up to more calories being eaten than were reported. No exercise program ? weights or aerobics or both ? works well without proper nutrition.

Granted, studies with true control for food intake are difficult to perform, especially for extended periods of time. But fortunately, we don?t need more studies to understand what happened in this case.

We already know that the key to fat loss is the calorie deficit, not aerobic training per se and not resistance training per se. It?s possible to create a calorie deficit with ANY type of training program ? cardio or weights. However, is it possible to do aerobics and not have a deficit? Of course. Is it possible to lift weights and not have a deficit? Of course! Is it possible out-eat ANY training program? Of course.

The biggest question in my mind is why the researchers drew the conclusions they did: ?Here?s what they said, word for word:

?If increasing strength and muscle mass is the goal, a program including resistance training is required? (So far so good? we?re still cool)?

?However, balancing time commitments against health benefits accrued, it appears that aerobic training alone is the optimal mode of exercise for reducing fat mass.? (Based on this data? Really? Okay, now we have a difference in opinion).

I believe, and actually the absolute data seems to confirm it, that resistance training plus aerobic training together trumps either type of training by itself. The study authors themselves point out that each type of training has its own set of benefits. But apparently, factoring in the increased time commitment of doing both, they judged in favor of aerobics only as the preferred option for decreasing fat mass.

That raises yet another question: Should losing weight or even just losing fat be your only goal or your primary focus?

Weight training: Key to the world?s fittest, leanest, healthiest and most attractive bodies?

I?m not sure what is the background of the authors of this study. Some researchers have done mostly academic work, others have a practical background in strength and conditioning. Here?s mine: I come from the trenches of a personal training and competitive bodybuilding career, with a degree in exercise science and I?ve held many personal trainer and strength coach certifications. So, I?m definitely partial to weight lifting and muscle-building as the best tool for transforming the body. However, I?m not alone in my ?bias??

I?ve been surrounded by other professionals in the fitness trenches my entire life and I don?t know a trainer worth his salt (one who actually transforms other people?s bodies every day) who agrees that aerobic training should be the sole focus of a fat loss program or even that fat loss should be the sole focus of a health and fitness program.

Mind you, I?m not knocking aerobics ? not at all. I?m a big fan of including cardio as one part of the mix. That?s my whole point: It?s practically common knowledge among experienced trainers that better body composition is produced from combining weight training with cardio training.

There is a group of strength coaches and diet gurus today who insist that weight training combined with very strict diet is sufficient to produce fat loss. Surely that is true, but isn?t it also true that most people seem to get better results when adding cardio on top of weight training? Aren?t there ?endomorph? body types where weight training alone doesn?t seem to produce the ?fat loss/ weight loss results wanted at the rate they are wanted? Didn?t this study seem to bear that out? ?I can side with the researchers as far as that goes: Weight training alone may not be optimal for fat loss for most people. Put cardio into the mix.

I suppose a good question is how do we prioritize and allocate our time to each activity? Following the same rationale as the researchers ? balancing time commitments with health benefits ? shouldn?t weight training be higher in the hierarchy than aerobics? Given the huge benefit list for weight training (which includes better health), shouldn?t an ideal program start with weight training plus nutrition as the core elements and then add cardio in to increase fat loss and conditioning as needed? That?s how I see it.

For those with real time commitment issues, it?s comforting to know that fat loss really can be achieved just by dialing in the diet (being meticulous about caloric deficit), and that a calorie deficit can be achieved with any choice of exercise. In a perfect world, I?d have you doing all three elements, with that order of priority: Nutrition, weight training and cardio training and order them in a hierarchy of importance based on your goals and time available.

The muscle and metabolism argument: Was this point overlooked?

Although this study had limitations and subjects had less than stellar results, it did have its strengths and it did raise some?good questions. I think a valid point was made in this research paper that may have been even more important than the part that made all the headlines. It was about the role of increasing lean body mass in helping with fat loss.

It has been widely believed and advertised for years, especially in the bodybuilding world, that if increasing lean mass increases metabolism, then increasing your lean mass will help you lose weight. It has sometimes even been implied or stated directly that you can sit on the couch or sleep and (with your new muscle), you?ll burn more calories and lose more fat from that alone.

The Duke researchers suggested that if this were true, shouldn?t the resistance training only group have fared better in the fat mass lost department? They wrote:

?It may be time to seriously reconsider the conventional wisdom that resistance training alone can induce changes in fat mass due to an increase in metabolism.?

It?s well known that an increase in lean body mass leads to an increase in basal metabolic rate. Therefore, for years, we have promoted the idea that gaining lean mass helps with fat loss ? and it does to some degree ? that part is not in dispute. However,?does it?help so much that we can say increasing lean mass, by itself, is a great fat loss strategy? If you only gain a few pounds of lean body mass, the increase in metabolism is nothing to write home about. Without dietary control, it?s no help at all.

It seems to me that the researchers could have made this their primary conclusion. Instead, they said, ?Aerobics is better than weight training for fat loss.? ?That?s where I think they mixed up their message, because weight training does help with fat loss in the short term, directly and significantly, from increased calorie expenditure. Over the long? term it helps too, but maybe not as much as we thought purely from increased basal metabolism.

Conclusions

Because the research is so inconclusive and opinions always vary due to personal preferences and ideaologies, the weights versus cardio (and what kind of each) debates are likely to continue. But if you consider the entire body of research we have today on improving body composition, combined with the real world experience of the top trainers and athletes who are in the trenches, you can find it very easy to conclude that the optimal method of fat loss is a combination of cardio training and resistance training.

Is more time required to do both resistance and aerobic training? Yes, but with proper program design, time efficiency can be greatly increased (and that is a subject I will be more heavily exploring in future Burn the Fat Blog posts). And isn?t it worth doing both, so you can gain ALL the benefits: burning more calories, increasing your strength, gaining lean muscle, decreasing your body fat, improving your health and transforming your entire body shape?

Aerobics helps increase fat loss and you can lose body weight and body fat with aerobics alone. But pumping iron should stay high on your fat loss strategy list. Which of these two ? cardio or weights ? gets the most priority and time from you may depend on your personal goals, but almost everyone can agree that either way, controlling your diet is critical.

When you add in motivation and accountability, that increases compliance to those first three elements, and you have as close to a ?no fail? program as you?ll ever have?Hey??doesn?t that sound a lot like Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle?

Israel says has no proof poison gas used in Syria

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel voiced doubt on Tuesday about the accuracy of Syrian activists' reports that chemical weapons had been used against rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

"We have seen reports from the opposition. It is not the first time. The opposition has an interest in drawing in international military intervention," Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Army Radio.

"As things stand now, we do not have any confirmation or proof that (chemical weapons) have already been used, but we are definitely following events with concern," he said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gathered activist accounts on Sunday of what they said was a poison gas attack in the city of Homs. The reports are difficult to verify, as the government restricts media access in Syria.

The Observatory, a British-based group with a network of activists across Syria, said those accounts spoke of six rebel fighters who died after inhaling smoke on the front line of Homs's urban battleground. It said it could not confirm that poison gas had been used and called for an investigation.

Syria has said it would never use chemical weapons against its citizens.

Asked about images purported to show patients being treated for possible gas poisoning, Yaalon said: "I'm not sure that what we're seeing in the photos is the result of the use of chemical weapons.

"It could be other things," he said, without elaborating.

On Sunday, senior Israeli defense official Amos Gilad said Syria's chemical weapons were still secure despite the fact that Assad had lost control of parts of the country.

As Syria's southern neighbor, Israel has been concerned about chemical weapons falling into the hands of Islamist militants or Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, cautioning it could intervene to stop such developments.

Syria envoy seeks peace as clashes rage

BEIRUT (Reuters) - International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi pursued mediation efforts in Damascus on Tuesday, but there was no pause in the bloodletting as Syrian Christians marked a bleak Christmas Day with prayers for peace.

"We are here in a cave that symbolizes Syria right now," said a priest standing beside a nativity scene in a grotto.

"It is cold here but the door is open to all refugees," he told Syrian state TV. "Amid the hunger, cold and deprivation, we still have hope for peace and love for our country."

More than 44,000 Syrians have been killed since a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad erupted 21 months ago, igniting an increasingly sectarian conflict that broadly pits a Sunni Muslim majority against Assad's Alawite minority.

Christians, many of whom have been reluctant to join what they see as an Islamist-tinged insurgency, feel threatened.

Bishop John Kawak, speaking on state TV, said the Christmas holiday was "a symbol for the rebirth of the nation". He condemned "terrorism", the government's term for the rebellion.

Brahimi met some dissidents who are tolerated by Assad but rejected by the mainstream opposition and by rebels fighting to oust him, a day after he held talks with the Syrian president.

There was no word on any progress in the U.N.-Arab League' envoy's drive to end violence that has intensified in recent months as Assad uses airpower and artillery against rebel gains.

Raja Naser, secretary general of the National Coordination Body, said after meeting Brahimi that the envoy planned a week of meetings in Damascus and would stay until Sunday.

"There is still a lot of concern but there is also great hope that these meetings with other Syrian officials will result in some agreements or positive developments," he said.

But most opposition groups appear frustrated with Brahimi's quest for a deal on a transitional government. He has not clarified any role for Assad, whose foes say he must simply go, arguing that too much blood has been shed for any other outcome.

GULF PLEA

Gulf Arab leaders, who have long called for Assad's removal and some of whom have helped the rebels with guns and money, urged swift world action to halt the "massacres" and violations of international law in Syria.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported clashes and government shelling in hotspots across the country, including towns on the eastern outskirts of Damascus.

Abu Nidal, a spokesman for the Rebel Military Council in Damascus, said fighters had killed the head of a local security branch in the capital's suburb of Jaramana, home to a large Christian and Druze population.

In his Christmas message to the world on Tuesday, Pope Benedict encouraged Syrians not to lose hope for peace.

"May peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict which does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims," he said.

"I appeal for an end to the bloodshed, easier access for the relief of refugees and the displaced, and dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict."

Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled abroad to escape the daily violence. Those who remain face severe shortages of food, fuel and other essentials as winter weather takes a grip.

Syrian activists offered a message of solidarity with Christians despite rising tensions in central Hama province, where rebels have demanded that Christian villages let them enter to force out the army and pro-Assad "shabbiha" militias.

"We say to the Christians, you are our brothers and our beloved, and your holiday is our holiday," said Abu Faisal, a Hama activist who posted a Christmas message on the Internet.

"The rebels are surrounding (the Christian town) Muhardeh to get rid of Assad's soldiers and shabbiha, but we have not forgotten your honorable stance when you took care of our refugees when the army entered Hama," he said.

"We will not accept that you are targeted by hatred, you are our brothers and our friends."

Nearly one in three children with food allergies experience bullying, survey shows

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Nearly a third of children diagnosed with food allergies who participated in a recent study are bullied, according to researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Almost eight percent of children in the U.S. are allergic to foods such as peanuts, tree-nuts, milk, eggs, and shellfish.

Nearly half of parents surveyed (47.9 percent) were not aware of the bullying -- although both the bullied children and their parents reported experiencing higher stress levels and lower quality of life.

The study, titled, "Child and Parental Reports of Bullying in a Consecutive Sample of Children with Food Allergy," appears Dec. 24 in the online issue of Pediatrics. The study was led by Eyal Shemesh, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Shemesh and his team surveyed 251 pairs of parents and children. The patient and parent pairs were consecutively recruited during allergy clinic visits to independently answer questionnaires. Bullying due to food allergy or for any cause, quality of life, and distress in both the child and parent were evaluated using validated questionnaires.

"Parents and pediatricians should routinely ask children with food allergy about bullying," said Dr. Shemesh. "Finding out about the child's experience might allow targeted interventions, and would be expected to reduce additional stress and improve quality of life for these children trying to manage their food allergies." Dr. Shemesh is Director of EMPOWER (Enhancing, Managing, and Promoting Well-being and Resiliency), a program within Mount Sinai's Jaffe Food Allergy Institute. Dr. Shemesh is also Chief of the Division of Behavioral and Developmental Health in the Department of Pediatrics at The Mount Sinai Medical Center.

"When parents are aware of the bullying, the child's quality of life is better," said the senior author, Scott H. Sicherer, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Chief, Division of Pediatric Allergy, Co-Director, EMPOWER program. "Our results should raise awareness for parents, school personnel, and physicians to proactively identify and address bullying in this population."

The work for the study was supported by the EMPOWER program, a program funded by a generous donation from the Jaffe Family Foundation, that is devoted to understanding and enhancing the quality of life of persons with food allergy.

Kuwait to host Syria crisis meeting, envoy meets Assad

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Kuwait will host an international conference next month to tackle Syria's humanitarian crisis, the ruling emir said on Monday, as foes of President Bashar al-Assad voiced frustration with international efforts to end the civil war.

In Damascus, special international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met Assad but the Syrian opposition vented its anger at what it called a "silence" over the unabated killing of civilians by government forces, most recently in the central town of Halfaya.

Assad is under growing pressure from rebel forces in the 21-month-old war that activists say has killed more than 44,000 people. However, diesel from his main international ally, Russia, has arrived in Syria, providing the first significant amounts of the fuel in months to power industry and the military, generate electricity and heat homes during the winter.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also said he did not believe Assad's government would use chemical weapons, in remarks broadcast shortly after activists released reports of what they said was a poison gas attack in the city of Homs.

Kuwait's emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al Sabah, said the conference for Syrian donors would be held in late January in response to an invitation by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

"The Syrian wound is still bleeding, and the killing machine still continues, killing dozens of our brothers in Syria each day," the emir told a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Bahrain.

Last week, the United Nations appealed for $1.5 billion to help save the lives of millions of Syrians suffering a "dramatically deteriorating" humanitarian situation. The appeals are to help 4 million people within Syria and up to 1 million Syrian refugees in five other countries until next July.

Underlining how rebels are taking the battle close to Assad's doorstep, U.N. and Arab League envoy Brahimi had to drive overland to Damascus from Lebanon on the eve of his meeting with the president because fighting around the international airport has made it impossible to fly in.

Brahimi said his talks with Assad had dealt with possible solutions to a crisis. "I told him what I was seeing abroad and about the meetings I had with different officials in the region and abroad," he told reporters. "The situation in Syria still is a reason for worry. We hope that all the sides work toward the solution, as the Syrian people want."

OPPOSITION ANGER

Syria's opposition fumed at what it called silence over the unrelated killing of civilians by Assad's forces. On Sunday, dozens were killed in Halfaya and many more wounded. Activists blamed an air strike on a bakery where a crowd was queuing in the town, which was seized by insurgents last week.

"Silence over the massacres committed against the Syrian people is blackmail and a means to pressure the people, their revolution, and their leaders," said Moaz Alkhatib, who heads the opposition National Coalition.

However, Alkhatib did not accuse anybody directly for remaining mum over what would be one of the deadliest air strikes of the civil war.

Activists also said rebels in central Hama province shot down a government fighter jet on Monday during clashes outside a village loyal to Assad. Rebels have captured a string of military compounds around the country. Damascus is now being dragged into the conflict, with fighting in its southern districts and the suburbs on its eastern outskirts.

Brahimi's plan for an end to the Syrian crisis centers on a transitional government, but has left vague Assad's role. The opposition rejects anything but Assad's overthrow and says the government crackdown has been too fierce to accept dialogue.

POISON GAS REPORTS

With rebel gains growing, the army has been increasingly relying on its superior weaponry. It has used air strikes and even long range, Scud-type missiles, according to U.S. and NATO reports.

Western powers have warned Assad that using chemical weapons would be a "red line", which they implied would draw international involvement in the conflict. Syria repeated on Sunday that it would never use chemical weapons against its people.

In Moscow, Foreign Minister Lavrov told the Russia Today (RT) television channel that recent signs that parts of Syria's chemical arsenal were being moved - a development that alarmed Western governments - was an effort by the government to make the weapons more secure.

"Our information is ... that the latest reports about some movement of the chemical weapons was related to steps undertaken by the government to concentrate the chemical stuff ... at two sites, to make sure it is absolutely protected," he said.

This correlated with information the Americans had, he said.

The activists' reports of what they said was a poison gas attack in Homs could not be confirmed, as the government restricts media access in Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gathered activist accounts of the incident, which said that six rebel fighters were killed after inhaling smoke on the front line of Homs's urban battleground.

The Observatory, a British-based group with a network of activists across the country, called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to send a medical team to the area to determine what had happened.

DIESEL LIFELINE

An Italian shipowner said two cargoes of Russian diesel had reached the Syrian port of Banias this month. It was unclear who was behind the shipments and there was no evidence they violated international sanctions against Syria.

"(Our vessels) loaded two cargoes of gasoil in Russia at the beginning of December for delivery to the East Mediterranean. The charterer then asked us to deliver the volumes to Banias," said Paolo Cagnoni, who heads Mediterranea di Navigazione S.p.A., the family-run Italian tanker firm.

He declined to disclose the names of the vessel charterers and the recipient of the deliveries, which amount to around 42,000 metric tonnes of gasoil worth close to $40 million at current market prices.

Insurance Scare Tactics

One of the most ill-advised promises President Obama made during the health care reform debate was this: ?If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.?

He should have known better. First, insurance companies and employers are far more in control of determining whether or not you can keep your health plan than the government. That was true before ObamaCare was passed, and it?s true today.

Second, ObamaCare will indeed mean that some health plans will no longer be available a year from now. That?s a good thing, despite what you?ll be hearing from companies that make huge profits selling inadequate coverage.

A few insurers have for years used slick brochures and sales pitches to persuade people to buy policies that will not come close to shielding them from financial ruin if they get sick or injured. ?Many people who have bought these policies undoubtedly believe they have a health plan worth keeping, especially since premiums for inadequate coverage are usually lower than premiums for real insurance. You can be certain that many of those folks will complain loudly when junk health insurance is banned in 2014 and, in so doing, become unwitting soldiers in the insurance industry?s ongoing battle to gut the consumer protections in ObamaCare.

Back to that first point for a moment. I remember shaking my head when I first heard the President assure me back in 2009 that I could keep my plan if I liked it. To deliver on that promise, the law would have to require employers and insurers to keep offering plans they want to get rid of, and that was never going to happen. A few years before I left my job in the insurance industry I was forced out of a plan I liked?a PPO?because my employer decided to stop offering PPOs to its workers and to move all of us into a high-deductible plan.

Now back to junk insurance. Starting in 2014, health insurance plans must offer a minimal level of coverage, and they cannot have sky-high deductibles and caps on covered benefits.? Big insurance companies like Aetna and Cigna are not at all happy about that because they make millions selling policies with very limited benefits that cover nothing after a paltry annual cap is reached.

To make us all want to petition Congress to change ObamaCare to allow them to keep selling these policies, insurance company executives have come up with a term to scare the bejesus out of us if they don?t get their way: premium shock.

At a meeting with Wall Street financial analysts a few days ago, Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini used that term in his warning that in some cases, premium hikes could soon be ?as high as 100 percent.?

?Premium rate shock for 2014, absent subsidies and everything else, is going to be in the neighborhood of 20 to 50 percent,? Bertolini said. ?And we?re going to see some markets?go as high as 100 percent.?

Note Bertolini excluded subsidies from his math. If he hadn?t his arithmetic wouldn?t have had the same impact.? Most people who have bought limited benefit plans are low-income individuals and families who currently can?t afford anything else. Under ObamaCare, starting in 2014 people up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level will be eligible for subsidies from the government to help them buy decent coverage.

Some background: In 2005, Aetna paid $250 million for Strategic Resources Co., a company that specializes in limited benefit plans. I found one such Aetna plan online that pays no more than $10,000 a year for inpatient hospital care and doesn?t cover pre-existing conditions during the first year of the policy. Under ObamaCare, not only will annual caps be unlawful, but insurers will also no longer be able to refuse to cover preexisting conditions.

Not to be outdone, Cigna in 2006 paid $175 million to buy Star HRG to compete with Aetna in the limited-benefits marketplace. ?Aetna and Cigna and the other companies that sell limited benefit plans want to protect those investments. That?s why they want us to worry about premium shock.

They?re also using that term?and its cousin, rate shock?to get us to go to bat for them to get Congress to allow them to continue charging their older customers five times or more than what they charge their younger policyholders.? In 2014 they won?t be able to charge older folks more than three times as much as younger people.

As part of their ?premium shock? campaign, insurance executives and their allies will remind us of Obama?s 2009 promise, and they?ll blame any rate increases a year from now on ObamaCare. Some increases are inevitable, but in return we?ll be spared from paying good money for coverage that is anything but good.
