Marvel?s Next Movie Likely to Be Guardians of the Galaxy

Despite the rumours earlier this month about a Black Panther movie coming down the pike, it now looks like Marvel?s next unannounced superhero movie will actually be another team-up of sorts. According to various sources around the web, Marvel is getting ready to unveil a Guardians of the Galaxy movie at the San Diego Comic Con next month and this will likely be the mystery project that they have slated for a May 2014 release. It?s not the first we?ve heard of this possibility; last August Twitch reported that a Guardians of the Galaxy movie was already in active development and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously mentioned them in interviews. But can such obscure characters carry on the massive success of the Marvel films?

Common Ventilation Systems Roofing Companies In Houston

If there is one situation that homeowners need to avoid, it would be having excess heat and moisture trapped in the attic.? This usually arises from improper or nonexistent roof ventilation.? It can also give way to a variety of problems that can pose serious risks to the integrity of your roof system and adjacent house structures.

So, a roofing company Houston homeowners can trust is one that makes sure that the right roof ventilation system is in place when doing any type of roof project.? Here are some of the most common roof ventilation systems Houston roofing companies install:

Gable Vents.? Usually found in olderHouston homes, gable vents are positioned in a house?s gable sides.? These vents allow the air in the attic to enter and go out from one side to the other.? However, a gable vent system is quite outdated and does not have the same efficiency as the newer roof ventilation systems.

Roof Vents And Fans.? This system usually works well when the lower intake vents are partnered with the right number of roof vents.? However, you need an experienced contractor to determine the right balance in order for the system to be efficient. Unfortunately, this kind of ventilation system also provides entrances for rodents and insects, too.

Ridge Vents.? The ridge vents system, used together with soffit vents, is considered the most efficient ventilation system by far.? In this system, fresh air is drawn in through the soffit vents while the hot air inside the attic gets out through the ridge vents.? The use of ridge vents and soffit vents is quite a popular choice among Houston homeowners who want to avoid trapped heat and moisture in their attics, especially during the humid and hot Houston summers.

To find out the perfect roof ventilation system for your home, ask the advice of experienced roofing professionals.? If you want a comprehensive and honest assessment of your roof ventilation needs, fill out our online form on http://www.alltexexteriors.com/ or call (888) 669-1806 to arrange for our roofing specialist to conduct onsite inspection, free of charge.

Tim Profeta: The Climate Post: Rio+20 Pushes on With Weak Text, Mixed Predictions

Delegates from around the world are meeting in Rio de Janeiro to discuss how to make the planet more sustainable, despite a rapidly growing population. The reprise of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit dubbed "Rio+20" has so far drawn mixed reactions: some call it an "opportunity"; others say it is another step on a long, complicated road to realizing a more sustainable society. William K. Reilly, former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator and chairman of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions Board of Advisors chose to reflect on then and now, noting the two decades since leaders first met in Rio the "concept of sustainable development has evolved from theory to increasingly common practice." BBC News illustrates just how much the world has changed since the first Earth Summit.

Late Monday night, negotiators did agree on a draft framework for sustainable development goals. The text is not expected to change much when heads of state convene to discuss it, according to U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern.

As the Washington Post reported, many of the concrete steps needed to move toward a more sustainable future are already being take on by major cities regardless of the outcome at Rio+20. The efforts of these 58 cities will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 248 million tons in 2020. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hopes energy has a big role and introduced the "Sustainable Energy for All Plan" in Rio, which would end energy poverty by 2030.

Despite what's happening in Rio, a new poll indicates many Americans believe there's been an environmental decline in the last 10 years and they are attributing it to human activity.

Japan Sets Sights on Solar Future

As it shifts from nuclear power following the Fukushima radiation disaster, Japan is positioning itself to become the second largest market for solar power. The country introduced incentives for renewable energy that could expand revenue in this area to more than $30 billion by 2016. In the U.K., energy from renewable sources accounted for roughly 12.4 percent of the European Union's overall consumption, with Estonia recording the largest increase between 2006 and 2010.

Germany, who also opted to move away from nuclear by 2022, is feeling the burden of its decision. Miranda Schreurs, director of the Environmental Policy Research Center at Berlin Free University, said, "The way for Germany to compete in the long run is to become the most energy-efficient and resource-efficient market, and to expand on an export market in the process." If Germany succeeds, Technology Review reported, it could provide a workable blueprint for other industrialized nations.

A new report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory finds the prospects for renewable energy, at least in the U.S., to be promising -- concluding it could supply 80 percent of the country's electricity by 2050.

Moratorium Mulled after Defeat of NC Sea Level Rise Bill

The North Carolina House of Representatives this week rejected a Senate bill that would have prohibited policy makers from using projections of accelerated sea level rise for coastal development planning purposes. This may lead lawmakers to enact a moratorium on such predictions pending further study by the state, which could take years. NewScientist breaks down the evidence of sea level rise in the state.

The EPA has turned down a demand by U.S. environmental groups to issue new regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft, ships and off-road vehicles, saying it "does not have the resources to consider all possible sources of climate change in the near or medium term." Meanwhile, the Senate on Wednesday defeated a proposed measure that would have overturned EPA's Mercury and Air Toxics Standard, or MATS, a rule aimed at limiting emissions of mercury, arsenic and other toxic air pollutants from coal-fired power plants. It will be the first federal standard to regulate toxic emissions from these plants, and is projected to result in coincident greenhouse gas reductions. A recent poll suggests most Americans favor the rule -- provided that companies are given enough time to comply.

Public companies in the UK -- some 1,600 in all -- may soon have to divulge all details about the greenhouse gases they emit, according to the Guardian. More companies may face the requirement, beginning as early as April 2013, after the policy is reviewed in 2015.

The Climate Post offers a rundown of the week in climate and energy news. It is produced each Thursday by Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions.

Is Home Schooling the Best Option for African American Children ...

Parenting

by Edward Lee ?|? on June 26th, 2012 ?|?

My wife recently sent me the article, Home schooling: Why more Black US families are trying it, and I checked it out. The article named school violence and school system?s labeling of children, i.e. ADHD or learning disabled, as the two primary reasons that more African Americans are choosing to home school their children.

As parents of a young child, living in a inner city, that has it share of ?school problems?, my wife and I are always talking about and looking into options for our child?s education. The public schools in our neighborhood are not really an option and the $27,000 private schools in our area, are not an option I want to take, smile. But I never really considered home schooling. In fact, I was pretty much against the idea.

In my opinion, homeschooling was an option for the affluent, it deprives kids of the chance to play sports and the kids have a hard time socially dealing with other kids. But then this article pointed out notable exceptions to each of my reservations. First their was Sonya, the government employee and single mother that wasn?t wealthy but decided to homeschool her son. Then their was, Tim Tebow the NFL quarterback that was homeschooled, still played high school sports and has become one of the most popular football players of our time. And Whoopi Goldberg who as a comedienne, actor and talk show host, I think is probably pretty ?socially adjusted?.

So at this point, now I am listening and wondering ? is home schooling a viable education option and why are more black families going that route?

So I spoke with Joyce Burgess, co-founder of the National Black Home Educators (NBHE), as she prepared for the 12th Annual NBHE Conference this weekend. Talk about a wealth of information! In addition to co-founding the organization, she has also home schooled her own 5 children over the last 23 years ? all of which are very successful in their chosen fields. Here are some of the benefits she cited for African American home schoolers:

1. Family Togetherness. We are losing a sense of family in our community, in large part to the messages taught in our public schools and the influences our children are being exposed to.

2. Nurturing environment. Parents can provide a environment catered to their child?s needs that kids do not get from their public school, at the same level.

3. Values. Parents retain the control over the values instilled in their children as opposed to the school ?system?.

4. Gang violence and drugs. In many cities, our schools have become inundated by the crime, drugs and gangs that surround that school.

5. Special needs. Teachers in the 1 teacher, 30 student classroom setting often don?t have the time or resources to focus on each child individually. She shared a story of a young girl that was punished and labeled as a behavior problem, because she would not sit still. It turned out that she was too young to articulate that she could not see, and her not sitting still was a desire to sit closer to the front of the class, so she could see.

6. Focus on education. According to Joyce, because of the failures of the education system, we are seeing African American boys as early as 14 and girls as early as 16 years of age, dropping out of public schools.

7. Sense of history is being lost. Beyond Martin Luther King, their is a wealth of ?Black? history that is never taught in a public school system that can be used to shape young African Americans.

8. Home schooled children are in high demand by colleges. Mrs. Burgess shared that, ?from your Harvard?s to the local Junior College? home schooled children are in high demand because of their preparedness to enter and excel at the college level.

To me these are pretty compelling arguments, especially those that speak to educational advancement and self-awareness, but I still have some questions.

What ways do you give a home school child the social skills to be prepared for life if they are not around other children their age, all day.

Joyce suggested that whether a child is home schooled or goes a more traditional route, a parent must be proactive in preparing a child socially for adulthood. Some of the suggestions offered were to involve children in local community sports programs. Some states also allow home schoolers to participate in their public school sports programs. Children also are a part of their local neighborhoods and local churches, which provide activities and opportunities for children to interact with other kids their age. She also recalled how her own children partook in college internships, worked on political campaigns and had foreign students stay with them in the their home.

The last question, I needed to address was that of cost. How much does it cost to home school a child?

According to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSDLA), which is an advocate for parents that choose to home school their children, the average cost is about $500, but in many cases could even be far less than that. At $500 a year, home schooling is far less than private school and more than public school. There should also be an expectation that at least one parent will have to spend time at home teaching that child.

I must admit after talking with Joyce and researching home schooling options for myself, I consider it a viable and very possible option for my own child. Of course we are just scratching the surface of the benefits of home schooling, to find out more go to www.nbhe.net.

How about you, BMWK family, do you think that their are benefits to African American?s receiving a home school education?

Communication: The #1 key to relationship management

In This Issue:

Dr. Zimmerman?s Tuesday Tip:

?Quality questions create a quality life.? Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.?
Anthony Robbins, author and management consultant

Dr. Alan Zimmerman?s Personal Commentary:

Immediately after World War II, the Allied Armies gathered up many hungry, homeless children and placed them in large camps.? There, the children were abundantly fed and cared for.? However, at night the children did not sleep well.? They seemed restless and afraid.

Then one psychologist hit on a solution.? After the children were put to bed, each one of them received a slice of bread to hold.? If they wanted more to eat, they were given more food.? But this slice of bread was to be held and not eaten.

The slice of bread produced marvelous results.? The children would go to sleep, subconsciously knowing and feeling they would have something to eat the next day.? That assurance gave the children the assurance they needed so they could sleep calmly and peacefully.

In a similar sense, we all need something to hold on to.? And few things are more important or more helpful than holding on to good, healthy, positive, productive relationships at work or at home.

The good news is ? you can strengthen or manage almost any relationship ? to make it better and better.? The key to it all is the ?excitement principle.?

As I discussed in last week?s ?Tuesday Tip,? the research makes it clear ? anything that increases the excitement level of two people ? and is seen as a positive experience by both people ? will strengthen the relationship between the two of them.? In other words, whatever increases your heart rate, blood pressure, and adrenalin ? in a good way ? when you?re with another person or a team of people ? will build up your relationship.

I gave you five ways to do that last week.? However, the very best way to use the ?excitement principle? to strengthen and manage your relationships is to increase the quality of your communication.??

And most day-to-day talk in work and home relationships does not strengthen the relationship.? It is merely ?functional? talk ? such as ? ?Customer Y needs that product shipped today ? We?ve got until this afternoon to finish the project ? The kids will be home at 5 ? and ? Let?s have pizza for dinner.?? It gets a job done, but it does not increase the excitement level or bring the people any closer together.

So what kind of communication works?? There are four kinds, each one more powerful than the previous one.

1.? Talk about the past.

Talk to the other person about things you did together in years gone by.? Talk about the places you?ve been together.? And talk about the things you got excited about.

This works equally well for teams on the job or family members at home.? When you talk about ?the good old days? or ?how things used to be,? you rekindle a certain camaraderie.? You see it happening at the annual company picnic or the ten-year class reunion.? It just plain feels good to remember all the good and bad things you went through ? together.

As you do so, remember to follow English author Quentin Crisp?s advice.? He said, ?The formula for a successful relationship is simple:? Treat all disasters as if they were trivialities, but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.?? In other words, put things in the best possible perspective.

2.? Laugh together.

Laughter releases endorphins that kill off pain.? And these endorphins can lead to a sense of well-being and optimism..? You benefit personally.

But when you laugh together, you also strengthen and manage your relationship more effectively.? The laughter can bridge the gap between total strangers and laughter can even reduce the tension in a tense situation ? which is often needed ? on and off the job.?

So I?m always looking for humor I can share with my friends and family as well as my clients and audiences.? For example, one of my colleagues, Scott Friedman, sent me the following.

  • A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.
  • Shotgun wedding: a case of wife or death.
  • Reading while sunbathing makes you well-red.
  • When two egotists meet?it?s an I for and I.
  • What?s the definition of a will? It?s a dead giveaway!

  • The man who fell into the upholstery machine is fully recovered.
  • Local Area Network in Australia: The LAN down under.
  • Those that get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end.

As fun and helpful as that can be, it?s even more effective if you ?

3.? Engage in open, honest self-disclosure.

Reveal some things about yourself that the other person would not know otherwise ? things that involve a bit of risk.? It kicks the ?excitement factor? into play.? After all, there is no intimacy without transparency.? And there is no teamwork without self-disclosure.

And one of the best places for self-disclosure to take place is in the performance appraisal process.? Unfortunately, many organizations have a difficult time getting their managers to give their employees timely, helpful performance appraisals ? because the appraisals provoke too much anxiety.?

But that?s crazy.? If a manager has been doing his/her job ? self-disclosing and sharing information with the employees on a regular basis ? there shouldn?t be any anxiety in giving performance appraisals.? All the appraisal does is summarize all the information the manager has already given the employee about his/her performance.

The anxiety comes into play when the manager stores up information for long periods of time.? Again, that?s crazy.? In so doing, he/she takes away the employee?s chances of improving his/her performance.? And what right does any manager have to deny his/her employees the opportunity to do the best possible job?? A manager has to self-disclose and give complete and honest feedback.

As a rule of thumb, if you?re a supervisor or manager, give your subordinates feedback every month that tells them how they?re doing.? Better yet, do it every week.? And when you have that brief discussion, ask your subordinates for some feedback.? Ask them if there is anything you could be doing more effectively.? Ask them if there is anything you could be doing to help them with their jobs.? You will be managing the relationship in way that allows for more back-and-forth self-disclosure.

Of course, there is this myth that feedback should only flow downward in an organization.? Actually, the best ? and maybe the most important ? feedback flows upward.? The Nixon White House needed to learn that.? Nixon created an environment where his subordinates only told him what he wanted to hear.? They did not give him any opinions that were contrary to the views he already held.? Of course, it created insanity.?

And there is a measure of insanity in any organization when the upper-level bosses are deprived of feedback.? They lose touch with reality and become very much like the Emperor and his new clothes.? No one told him the truth; so he walked around naked.

In my speaking and consulting practice, I find that the worst managed companies are those where it is common knowledge that it is NOT okay to go into the offices of a senior executive and give him/her absolutely honest feedback.? Doing so might result in the loss of the employee?s job or at least damage his career.?

I tell executives that it is YOUR job to create an environment of trust that ripples throughout every level of the organization.? It is YOUR job to create an environment where subordinates feel safe giving you open, honest feedback.?

The fact is ? everyone benefits when leaders, managers, and subordinates are open, honest, and self-disclosing.? In fact, I?ve noticed that is the norm in the best organizations.?

And how do you know if you have that kind of an environment going on at work?? Simple.? On a piece of paper, write down the name of your superior.? List all the things he or she does well and all the areas where improvement is needed.? Then imagine yourself bringing that paper to your superior.? If you feel any anxiety about that, it?s because there are some things on your paper you haven?t told your superior.

In essence, to strengthen and manage your relationships, increase your self-disclosure.

And the VERY BEST way to do that is ?

4.? Ask and answer brave questions.

It?s a skill that is lacking in so many relationships.? Lots of people don?t know how to connect on a deeper level.? So they talk about the things they have to do, the people they know, or relatively unimportant topics such as the weather, the football game, and what?s for dinner.?

But the strongest teams and best relationships always go beyond superficial conversation.? They ask what I call ?Brave Questions? ? questions that are a bit more personal ? and a bit more risky.? They seek to understand the other person on a much deeper level.? And when they?re done right, you infuse your relationships with a surge of energy.? You go beyond relationship management to relationship building.

Deb Olswold testified to that.? She wrote to tell me this technique got her a better job.? In her words, Deb said, ?I have always been a very shy person, always in the background of the workplace, the family, and my personal life.? Then I was asked to interview for a higher ranking position, so I rushed out to get a copy of your book, ?Brave Questions.?? I read the book, wrote a few of the questions on a small piece of paper, and went to the interview. Instead of just passively sitting back and letting them take the entire lead, I asked them such things as, ?Where do they want to be in two years?? What kind of person are they looking for?? And what do they expect from me???

?Because of your book, I went through the entire interview with a sense of confidence.? An hour after the interview, they called to offer me the position.? I accepted the position and have thanked you in my daily prayers.? I know that your ?Brave Questions? helped me get the best job I have ever had. The 400 questions in the book are fantastic.? I can finally ask questions with confidence, and I can move into a meeting with ease.? The old ?shy? secretary is fading away as my new self-esteem emerges.?

After last week?s Tip, so many people called in about the discount on??The Brave Question Payoff:? Building Stronger Relationships And Greater Teamwork By Asking All The Right Questions? at 40% off, That I have decided to extend the sale.? To help you get started on better relationship management, I am?continuing the?discount of 40% off.
Just click here to get your copy NOW!

As Deb so clearly indicates, there?s power in asking and answering ?Brave Questions.? It can improve your effectiveness on the job.? But ?Brave Questions? are equally effective at home.????

Kelly Daufeldt told me about that. She wrote me, saying, ?My husband and I recently heard you speak at the Wisdom Financial Seminar.? As we drove home, we began asking each other Brave Questions, and we?ve continued the practice.? It?s been great!!? We had a strong marriage but now it?s better than ever!??

Kelly continued, ?Then I decided to try this technique on our three small children and their friends.? We had a couple of the neighborhood kids over for lunch, and just for the fun of it I brought out your ?Brave Questions? book while they were eating and asked them a few questions.? The response was phenomenal!!? They didn?t want the lunch to end.? I had so much fun laughing and learning about the littlest kids in our neighborhood ? not to mention that your book helped me earn the ?Coolest Mom? award with all the kids!? Thanks so much again!!!?

You get the point.? To build strong relationships, to manage all your relationships for the better, you?ve got to get beyond the fluff and the superficial.? You?ve got to ask and answer brave questions.? You?ve got to get to the real meat ? and you will be blessed with teams that work and relationships that work.

Action:

Decide this week to engage at least two people in a deeper conversation where you ask each one of them at least two Brave Questions. And then listen closely to their answers.

?Transforming the people side of business ? to help you get the payoffs you want and need?

Military veterans to get priority for police jobs under COPS grants

Federal grant program to put more cops on the street emphasizes jobs for military veterans who served after 9/11. Unemployment among recent veterans stood at 12.7 percent in May.?

Recent military veterans will have top priority for jobs under a federal program to put more police officers on patrol on America's streets.

Under the Justice Department's COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) program, 629 of the 800 police jobs funded for the next three years ? all the newly hired officers ? must go to veterans who served at least 180 days' active duty since 9/11. This is the first time the 18-year-old COPS program has required cities and counties seeking grants to hire veterans exclusively.

Recent vets face high unemployment rates, and Vice President Joe Biden said Monday that this initiative is part of the Obama administration's effort to try to help them transition to civilian life.?

"We don?t think if they fought like hell over there they should have to fight as hard [to find a job] when they get back home,? Mr. Biden said on a press conference call, shortly before?Attorney General Eric Holder announced the new COPS requirement in Philadelphia.

In his State of the Union message in January, President Obama declared that employment for military veterans would be a priority for his administration. But joblessness remains a stubborn problem. ??

Unemployment among recent veterans jumped to 12.7 percent in May, up from 9.2 percent the previous month, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Veterans Affairs blog notes that this number jumps up and down but is trending downward overall.

Police departments have had their own struggles with funding and personnel. At least 85 percent of departments have reported budget cuts, and thousands of police positions around the country have remained unfilled due to lack of funding, noted?Associate Attorney General Tony West during the conference call.

The grants announced Monday total more than $111 million, which will help bolster departments in 221 cities and counties ? and the money is already appropriated, so will not provoke a budget fight in Congress.

COPS funding approached 1990s levels at the height of the recession in 2009, though it has fallen off significantly since the end of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

President Bill Clinton signed off on the program as part of a package of anticrime legislation in 1994. It did not get as much funding under President George W. Bush, but the current vice president doesn?t see it going away anytime soon.

?It?s popular with the public, needed by veterans, and will benefit the community all around,? said Biden.

How much can a president alter the economy? New poll results.

Does a new survey really imply that most Americans don't think the economy has a significant influence on the economy? A closer look at poll results hints at an electorate knowledgeable about how government works.

For all their concerns about the economy as a top election issue, American voters don't have huge expectations of what the occupant of the Oval Office can do to steer a better course on things like jobs and GDP.

That's a central message from a new Associated Press/GfK poll that's in the news Monday.

In reporting its survey of US adults, the AP encapsulated the story in this headline: "Poll: Half doubt next president will alter economy." The story has been picked up by various news organizations Monday, and there have been blogs about it, under similar headlines.

So, wait a minute. Is this poll really telling us that the 2012 presidential election ? billed as an epic battle between President Obama and Mitt Romney over the nation's economic soul ? is essentially meaningless?

Far from it, really.

The grain of truth in the AP headline is that fewer than half of Americans (48 percent) say the election outcome will have "a great deal" or "a lot" of impact on the economy. And history suggests some justification for that view. A president is just one part of the federal government, after all, and the federal government is just one influence on the vast web of consumers and suppliers known as the economy. Most citizens know that.

But here's the important caveat:

Federal policies do matter for the economy, and citizens know that, too. Where the AP story played up the fact that "only" 48 percent of respondents see the election having a significant influence on the economy, the number of people in the poll who said the election won't make any difference was much smaller: just 7 percent.

Here's the way the answers broke down in the poll, which was taken June 14-18.

When asked about the election's expected impact on the economy, 7 percent said they expect none at all, 17 percent said "a little," 26 percent said "just some," 18 percent said "a lot," and 29 percent said "a great deal." So the largest cluster of responses actually came on the end of the spectrum viewing the election as very consequential.

When the poll diced the question into smaller parts ? on health care, unemployment, and the federal budget deficit ? the responses ran along much the same lines. The next president will influence health care a bit more than he will influence the overall economy, they predict, and he will influence unemployment and deficits a bit less.

Again, AP staked out one valid point: Many Americans are rightly skeptical of how much one person can do, even someone sitting in the Oval Office.

Consider another recent poll, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International for the financial firm Bankrate.com. The survey found that 21 percent of Americans think an Obama victory would be best for their personal pocketbooks, an equal percentage favors Mr. Romney, while fully 50 percent "don?t think it will make much difference either way," Bankrate reported.

At the same time, all signs point toward the economy remaining a vital campaign issue ? with the two main candidates staking out considerable contrasts on how they would approach economic policy. Mr. Obama hopes to tax the rich more, while Romney says he wants them to pay about the share of overall US income taxes that they do now, to give just one example.

And all signs suggest that when the election is over, the White House occupant will influence important choices the nation faces on matters including taxes, federal spending, entitlement programs, and the regulation of health insurance.

Egypt on alert as election result imminent

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's ruling armed forces were on alert on Sunday as fears of violence mounted in the final hours before the state election committee is to name the winner of last weekend's presidential election at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT).

Mohamed Morsy of the long-oppressed Muslim Brotherhood has already claimed to be the successor to the ousted Hosni Mubarak. Millions of his Islamist loyalists may react with fury if the run-off goes to Ahmed Shafik, a former general and Mubarak ally.

Few troops were on the streets but security officials said they were ready to respond to trouble. Government workers around Cairo's Tahrir Square, where thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters had gathered, were encouraged to go home for the day.

Armored vehicles were posted in the capital at the election committee headquarters and the government information office where a news conference will end an anxious week of waiting.

The result will be historic for the Middle East, but will not end power struggles between the army, Islamists and others over Egypt's future.

Morsy says he won the race to lead the biggest Arab nation, even if the generals who have been in charge since Mubarak was ousted 500 days ago are not giving up their control just yet.

The Brotherhood and liberal-minded activists who galvanized the street last year against Mubarak may react angrily if the election committee announces the winner is instead Shafik, a former air force commander and last prime minister of the old regime. Like Mubarak, every president for six decades has emerged from military ranks.

Many Egyptians, and millions across the region, would see a Shafik win as a mortal blow to last year's Arab Spring revolt, despite his assurances of also wanting an inclusive government.

"Egypt waits for the president and prepares for the worst," wrote Al-Masry Al-Youm daily in a front-page headline, referring to concerns about violence erupting. Echoing that, Al-Watan wrote: "The Brotherhood prepares the stage for Morsy, and an intense security alert in case of a Shafik win."

The new president will emerge with fewer powers than the candidates, pruned by a first round of voting in May, had expected when the army promised civilian rule by July 1.

"Everyone in Egypt is worried. The army must know the result and must have taken precautions," said Ali Mahmoud, a 44-year-old taxi driver, worried like many Egyptians that months of turmoil is not over yet. "If Shafik wins, we will have a lot of problems. If Morsy wins then protests should be less."

The ruling military council, which pushed Mubarak aside on February 11, 2011 to appease the protesters in the streets, has stripped the presidency of many powers and dissolved the Brotherhood-led parliament elected in January.

NAGGING FEARS

Yet the presidency is still a prize, even if the vote may only open a new chapter in what has been a turbulent and often bloody transition overseen by the army since Mubarak fell.

An Islamist president of Egypt would be a major milestone for the Middle East, and near unthinkable 18 months ago. It is far from confirmed, but the military, Brotherhood and other officials have given signs they expect it to happen.

Morsy, a 60-year-old, U.S.-educated engineer and political prisoner under Mubarak, declared victory within hours of polls closing last Sunday - a move condemned by the generals. In a sign of continued confidence, he has already met other groups and drafted an accord to form a national coalition government.

His party issued a statement on Saturday saying it had called on "all partners in the nation, from all movements, to take part in this national platform, to guarantee the success of what we have achieved and their active participation in rebuilding the country in the manner it deserves".

One of those involved, Abdel Gelil Mostafa of the reformist National Association for Change, told Reuters on Saturday: "We agreed on a general program, especially for if Morsy won.

By contrast supporters of Shafik, 70, who was Mubarak's last prime minister in his final desperate days, kept a low profile, although he did declare publicly on Thursday he was confident.

A victory for Shafik, who won backing in the run-off from many who decided they liked religious rule even less than a candidate drawn from the familiar military establishment, could spark protests from well-organized Islamist movements, which the army and security forces might confront on the streets.

Indicating concerns about the reaction to any result, an Interior Ministry source said: "There is tight security at vital state institutions, particularly the Interior Ministry. Any assaults will be dealt with according to the law."

However, there have been indications from senior figures in the Brotherhood and military council that they have prepared for a Morsy presidency in meetings since the election.

OLD ENEMIES

While officials deny any negotiation over the long-drawn-out process of tallying the election results themselves, there would be greater scope for compromise to defuse tension over what many have called the army's "soft coup", against parliament and the powers of the president, if Morsy is made head of state.

The Brotherhood has said it will go on protesting until the military council cancels the dissolution and a decree which gave its legislative powers to itself, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). But were its candidate to be confirmed in office, then the wary symbiosis between the two old enemies, seen since Mubarak was ousted, may continue in a new form.

It is a collaboration that irks many of the secular liberals who led the first wave of the uprising against Mubarak but found themselves fragmented and eliminated in last month's first round of voting, left with a difficult choice between army and Islam.

Hundreds of people were in Tahrir Square on Sunday, both those protesting against the army's refusal to give up power and supporters of Morsy. "Down, down with military rule," they chanted. Some held up posters of Morsy. The Brotherhood and others have called for an open-ended protest.

The generals have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close U.S. ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.

Their moves in the past 10 days to curb the presidency and hang on to a veto over legislation, as well as to claim a role in drafting a new constitution, mean that the transition process goes on even after the July 1 deadline.

Washington and the European Union, both major aid donors, have expressed concern that the military is backtracking. But both also share its anxiety over a sweeping Islamist takeover, worried about Egypt turning anti-Western and reneging on its peace with Israel, and also voicing concern for civil rights.

Violence by hardline Islamists in Tunisia, whose revolt inspired that in Egypt, has troubled many Egyptian liberals.

Key to the transition to democracy will be drafting a constitution. That work has been hostage to partisan wrangling in the now defunct parliament, where one assembly collapsed after complaints it was too Islamist and a second faces a challenge in court on Tuesday that many expect to trigger a clause in the SCAF decree letting it name a new drafting panel.

The Brotherhood has portrayed itself as a modern movement, ready to work with others and willing to respect treaties. Some supporters cite the example of Turkey as a model - a Muslim democracy with a history of military interference in politics, where devout, elected politicians have slowly asserted control.

The bearded, bespectacled Morsy was not a familiar figure to Egyptians. Some ridicule him as the movement's "spare tire"; his campaign began after a more senior leader was barred from the race. Critics say he would be a mere front-man as president, for less visible pillars of the Brotherhood behind the scenes.

Samsung Galaxy S III (T-Mobile)

Giant, bold mega-phones are the new smartphone trend, and the impressive Samsung Galaxy S III ($279.99 with contract) is T-Mobile's first offering. With its 4.8-inch HD screen and state-of-the-art sharing and media features, the Galaxy S III makes a great window onto T-Mobile's fast 4G Internet. Its overall performance and quality make the Galaxy S III our new Editors' Choice for touch-screen smartphones on T-Mobile.

Editors' Note: The Samsung Galaxy S III models on all four major carriers are extremely similar, so we're sharing a lot of material between our various reviews. That said, we're testing each device separately, so read the review for your carrier of choice.

Physical Design
All of the new Galaxy S III models look the same, except for the carrier logo on the back panel. Each is available in dark blue or white (AT&T also has a red option coming this summer), and they're some of the biggest phones we've ever handled. At 5.4 by 2.8 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and 4.7 ounces, the GS3 is larger than the HTC One S ($199, 4.5 stars), although it's still noticeably smaller and lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Note phone/tablet hybrid ($299, 3 stars). ?That said, this is not a phone for folks with small hands.

I'm not a fan of huge?phones. But I've given up on panning them because every time I suggest these handsets are too big, I get pummeled by comments from people who adore them. Huge phones are the thing. I accept it.

The GS3's all-plastic body feels a little less high-end than the anodized gray aluminum of the HTC One S, but the phone is solidly built, and light despite its size. The front of the phone is dominated by the 4.8-inch, 1280-by-720-pixel Super AMOLED HD screen. Yes, it's PenTile, which can sometimes look slightly pixelated. But, no, you probably won't notice. Below the screen, there's a physical Home button, as well as light-up Back and Multitasking buttons that start out invisible, so you have to memorize where they are or change a setting to keep them illuminated. The 8-megapixel camera is on the back panel, which, thanks to its reflective finish, doubles as a pocket mirror.?

The default Automatic Brightness setting makes the screen too dim. Kill it and pump up the brightness and it's fine, even outdoors.?

Unlike the competing HTC One S, the S III has a removable 2100mAh battery. Taking off the back cover also reveals the microSD card slot, which supports cards up to 64GB.

loading...

Call Quality and Internet
If you're interested in talking on your smartphone, buy the Galaxy S III. Its advanced call quality features make a real difference. Default call quality is good. Volume is on the high end of average, with no distortion from loud inputs, and the speakerphone is loud enough to use outdoors. The microphone does a good job of cancelling background noise. Bluetooth headsets work fine with Samsung's "S-Voice" voice dialing system, and the phone supports T-Mobile's seamless Wi-Fi calling system.

But as with so many things here, call quality gets richer if you burrow down into the GS3's settings screens. A Volume Boost button throws the phone into a super-loud, quasi-speakerphone mode for noisy areas, but that's just the start. There's also an option to set custom call EQ: The phone plays you a sequence of quiet high and low tones and you tell it which ones you can hear, and then it EQ's calls accordingly. This is pretty radical stuff. I prefer my calls sharp, with more high-end, for instance, and the GS3 offers that. This all makes the GS3 the best voice phone on T-Mobile.

For data, the GS3 hits T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network, which can sometimes match AT&T's and Verizon's LTE on download speeds. It hits global HSPA+ and Wi-Fi on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC are also on board. T-Mobile still blocks Google Wallet, but Samsung found its own uses for NFC, which I'll get to below.

Battery life is a major strength here. We got 10 hours, 47 minutes of talk time, which is impressive, and, since the battery is removable, you can also carry a spare for extra juice, something you can't do with the HTC One S.

Software and Performance
The Galaxy S III runs Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" with a whole lot of exclusive Samsung extensions. Performance was excellent in my tests. The Qualcomm S4 chip running at 1.5GHz is the fastest one we've seen in smartphones so far, and it's able to take on any app challenge you throw at it, including games on the HD screen. Our benchmark tests proved this, although they were within the margin of error when compared with the One S. Both phones are very fast.

Exclusive new features include S-Beam, the ability to transfer files by tapping two phones together and using a combination of NFC and Wi-Fi Direct; S-Voice, Samsung's answer to Apple's Siri; and TecTiles, NFC-enabled accessory tags that can change the settings on your phone. You also get lots of sharing and tagging options in the camera, such as automatically tagging your friends' faces, and the ability for multiple GS3s within a few feet of each other to automatically share all of their photos.

Many of these features work well, but they're almost all buried. The interface is something of a scavenger hunt. Take Smart Stay, a neat new feature which detects your face and keeps the screen from going black while you're looking at it. I love it! But it's not on by default, and the only way to turn it on is by going to the Display area under Settings. S-Beam is similarly buried, under the Wireless menu.

Noted outsourcer pretty upset about Romney outsourcing ? Hot Air

posted at 6:41 pm on June 23, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

You can file this one away as yet another case of Team Obama and the gang that can?t seem to shoot straight. As we noted earlier, the latest arrow in Barack Obama?s reelection quiver is to tie Mitt Romney to job outsourcing during his tenure at Bain Capital. This is a charge which was quickly picked up and trumpeted by the media, hoping to score a big hit against the GOP hopeful.

It certainly has some potential as campaign issues go. There is simply no denying that outsourcing has been bleeding high tech and manufacturing jobs alike out of the US since the 90?s, and there are plenty of people who are upset about it. So thinking that they smelled a bit of blood in the water, the Obama campaign continued the push by hosting a conference call on the subject.

The Obama campaign pounced this morning on a Washington Post article claiming Bain Capital invested in companies that helped ship American jobs overseas while Mitt Romney was at the helm of the firm, calling it a ?significant moment? in this campaign.

?People really have a fundamental choice in this election,? Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod told reporters on a conference call. ?The question is, do they want an outsourcer-in-chief in the Oval Office or do they want a president who will fight for American jobs, American manufacturing and the American middle class.?

And who did they get as an expert spokesperson to back up Axelrod on the subject? Enter one Leo Hindery. But Team Obama seems to have forgotten the importance of checking out the background of who you have acting as your surrogate. Hindery was the CEO of GlobalCenter around the same time Mitt was with Bain. And it turns out that Mr. Hindery knows a thing or two about outsourcing himself, as this corporate press release from 2000 shows. (Emphasis mine)

GlobalCenter?s services integrate the latest technology into an economical outsourcing model that specializes in the four elements critical for e-businesses to succeed in the new economy: connectivity, data centers, on-demand Internet applications and professional services. These services offer GlobalCenter customers reliability, cost-effectiveness, faster time to market advantages and economies of outsourcing, significantly reducing total cost-of-ownership with less capital and fewer internal IT staff requirements.

Oh, and the hits don?t stop coming there. The latest Obama spokesperson against the vulture capital tendencies of Mitt Romney wound up leaving that company shortly after that press release went out. And what happened next? Hindery somehow made a small fortune for himself as the company tanked and left everyone else unemployed and holding the bag.

Hindery, the former Chief Executive Officer of Global Crossing and a strong supporter of the Democrat Party, has been linked to highly questionable, undisclosed stock trades. The trades, which netted Hindery hundreds of thousands of dollars, were made at a time when Global Crossing barred its officers from trading company shares. While Hindery made off like a bandit, many were left penniless.

Leo Hindery Is One Of The Biggest Donors To The Democrat Party, Having Contributed More Than $2 Million Since 1999

I can?t confirm this, but I hear rumors that next week Axelrod will be trying to get an Obama endorsement from Allen Stanford.

(AP) ? San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker is suing a New York City club and its operators for $20 million over a scratched cornea he says he suffered during a fight involving singer Chris Brown and members of hip-hop star Drake's entourage.

The suit was filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan on Thursday. It says the W.i.P club in SoHo and its operators were negligent in security and supervision, which allowed the fight to take place.

Chris Brown, his girlfriend and his bodyguard were among eight injured during the fight inside the club last week. Police say members of Drake's entourage stopped Brown as he was leaving. The fight escalated and bottles were thrown.

There was no answer at phone numbers listed as affiliated with those named in the lawsuit.
