HOUSTON -- We?re hearing from one of the victims who was shot last week on the Lone Star College campus. Jody Neal was shot six times. He?s being treated in the intensive care unit at Ben Tab Hospital for his critical injuries.

?I would like to thank everybody praying for me. I appreciate your kind thoughts,? said Neal.

Those words were recorded in his hospital room and played by family members on Wednesday.

Authorities say Trey Foster shot Neal after the two bumped into each other and then argued on campus.

?Jody was shot twice in the stomach, twice in the arm, once in the main artery of his leg, and they found one just recently in his back,? said Sharon Mayo, Neal?s aunt. ?He just had surgery yesterday for that.?

Relatives say a portion of his intestines had to be removed and he could still lose a leg.

Neal claims police treated him more like a suspect than a victim after they saw his tattoos. He denies being associated with any gangs, saying he is trying to get his GED and aspires to be a tattoo artist and graphic designer.

New Home Construction In CT Strongest In Four Years | Connecticut ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? January 30, 2013 ? (RealEstateRama) ? New residential construction in Connecticut was the strongest in four years in 2012, as demand for new housing units appeared to gain momentum, according to a report today.

Towns and cities issued permits for 4,140 single-family houses, condominiums and apartment units last year, a 46-percent jump from 2,837 in 2011 when new home construction hit the lowest level in decades.

The report, from the state Department of Economic and Community Development, represents a sample of 128 municipalities that is surveyed every month by the U.S. Census. Once a year, the Census surveys all 169 towns and cities and typically releases those statistics each May for the previous year.

Still, the report today gives the first indication of a potential upturn in the state?s new home construction market. There have been false starts before, however: in 2010, the number of permits issued rose only to fall in 2011.

Today?s report also included a breakdown by type of housing. Buildings with five or more units led the way with 2,015, followed by single-family houses, with 1,997. Duplexes accounted for 66 units, while three- and four-family dwellings had 62 units.

MOOCs - need K-12 pay attention? - Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog

A conclusion?is the place where?you get tired of thinking.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Arthur Bloch?

Like my friend Miguel over at Around the Corner, I have been reading a lot about Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) lately and wondering if it is worth investing my time and energy in learning more about them from a K-12 perspective. ?(Here is the Wikipedia's description.)

Some of my favorite thinkers published on the subject of MOOCs recently. (Emphasis mine.)

Scott McLeod in?MOOCs are here. How should state universities respond??shares a paper by two Iowa State University statistics professors who warn:

Almost inevitably, the advent of large-enrollment, on-line college courses will put many colleges and universities out of business, and dramatically reduce the size of many others. In this new environment, there may also be opportunities for some educational institutions to offer new and valuable components to college education (even if much-reduced in scale relative to plans they have made in the past). But this will not happen without serious and realistic thought and planning ? of a qualitatively different nature than has ever been needed before ? by administrators and faculty.

Larry Cuban in his blog post?"Irrational Exuberance": The Case of MOOCs?observes:

Where the incoherence and mindlessness enter the picture is the current thinking among university officials and digital-minded faculty that delivering a degree or college-level courses to anyone with an Internet connection will revolutionize U.S. higher education institutions. While teaching is clearly an important activity of universities, doing research and publishing studies is the primary function. The structures (e.g., departmental organization, professional schools) and incentives (e.g., tenure, promotion) of top- and middle-tier institutions drive tenure, promotion, and time allocation for faculty. MOOCs will do nothing to alter those structures and incentives. If anything, MOOCs could accelerate and deepen the split between tenure-line faculty and adjuncts with the latter taking on these larger courses for a pittance. To think that such offerings by professors will transform higher education gives new meaning to the word ?flaky.??

NYT columnist Thomas Friedman, "Revolution Hits the Universities"?pundits (is this a verb?):

Lord knows there?s a lot of bad news in the world today to get you down, but there is one big thing happening that leaves me incredibly hopeful about the future, and that is the budding revolution in global online higher education. Nothing has more potential to lift more people out of poverty ? by providing them an affordable education to get a job or improve in the job they have. Nothing has more potential to unlock a billion more brains to solve the world?s biggest problems. And nothing has more potential to enable us to reimagine higher education than the massive open online course, or MOOC, platforms that are being developed by the likes of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and companies like Coursera and Udacity.

Here is my conclusion (see opening quote): The impact of MOOCs will depend less about technology and more about whether formal educational institutions and the credentials they grant still have validity in our society.?

To me it seems we are coming up on a two-tiered educational system.

The traditionalists will continue to look for dentists, doctors, engineers, teachers, and others who have licenses and degrees from accredited insitutions of higher education. (I've always thought that certificate on my dentist's wall was comforting as the drill comes nearer.) Traditional parents will continue to save and borrow to send their children to these schools, despite growing evidence there is little economic payback for many so educated. Traditional students will continue to worry about grades, class rank, and school prestige. Traditional employers will ask for college degrees in job descriptions.

But I see the potential for a growing group on non-traditionalists who find other means, less expensive and perhaps more meaningful, of demonstrating their competency in a field - badges, certificates of completion, apprenticeship programs, competency testing, portfolios of work, and resumes of successful products with recommendations. Parents will support this alternative means of "gettin' educated" and employers will pay more attention to past performance than degrees. And students themselves will see education's purpose as meeting vocational and personal needs rather than simply a hoop through which society expects its members to jump if they are to be valued.

As society in developed nations stratfies into what seems like the wealthy and the poor, as formal education loses ground as a guarantee of upward mobility and financial success, and as developing countries see the need to find inexpensive means of educating masses of people, the non-traditional view of education will grow. (If I am in a poor country and I have the choice of no dentist or a dentist who has received some alternative form of training, hey, I know what I'd do.)

These may be famous last words, but as long as U.S. K-10 schools have not only educational but custodial responsibilites for kids, I don't see MOOCs as a real game changer. However we may see more students ages 16+ drop out of high school to pursue other non-traditional learning opportunities, especially if we don't figure out how to personalize education in ways that serve non-traditional learners.?

(AP) ? Prayers are pouring in and fans are donating money for a Winter X Games snowmobile competitor who is in critical condition following a crash last week.

Caleb Moore was performing a flip off a jump last week when he caught the top of the hill in the landing area and went over the handlebars. The 25-year-old was able to walk away but later developed bleeding around his heart and a secondary complication involving his brain.

No update on his condition was available Wednesday.

To help defray the medical costs, a website has been set up for the family to raise $300,000 to help pay his hospital bills.

3Qs: Gender equality in the military | news @ Northeastern

The Pentagon?s decision to lift the ban on women in combat has been characterized as a huge win for gender equality. Do you agree?

Yes, I do. This issue has been high on the agenda of women?s groups for many years, not only because of the gen?eral mes?sage that it sends about women?s capac?i?ties but also because it will enhance the careers of many women in the mil?i?tary. In addi?tion, it makes sense in terms of ensuring that our mil?i?tary is the best that it can be. We know from many studies that the more diver?sity in the room the better the decision-??making will be?and I think that that will be borne out as women advance through the mil?i?tary ranks and are at the table in greater num?bers as impor?tant deci?sions are?made.

I have been puz?zled in recent years that there has been sig?nif?i?cant sup?port nation?wide to combat dis?crim?i?na?tion in the mil?i?tary on the basis of sexual orientation?particularly from many uni?ver?si?ties that have restricted mil?i?tary activ?i?ties on campuses?whereas the mil?i?tary has openly dis?crim?i?nated against women for years without sig?nif?i?cant protest. The lifting of this ban is an impor?tant step for?ward for equality.

Eating Your Large Meals Earlier in the Day Could Keep You on Track with Your Diet

Eating Your Large Meals Earlier in the Day Could Keep You on Track with Your DietNew research suggests that if you want to lose weight, you should focus not just on what you eat, but also when you eat?particularly for your biggest meals of the day.

The study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, was conducted by researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Tufts University, and the University of Murcia in Spain. 420 overweight volunteers in Spain were put on a 20-week weight-loss program and divided into either an early-eaters group or a late-eaters group, according to their own preferences for when they ate lunch (typically the largest and main meal in Spain).

The researchers found that the late-eaters (those who ate lunch after 3 p.m.) lost less weight than the early-eaters, had a much slower weight-loss rate, and also had a lower estimated insulin sensitivity (a risk factor for diabetes). The timing of other smaller meals didn't affect weight-loss success and the researchers found no differences between the two groups on traditional weight-loss factors such as sleep duration and total calorie intake and expenditure.

Those who ate lunch later also ate fewer calories during breakfast and were more likely to skip breakfast, however, so that could be another factor.

Eating your largest meal earlier in the day could give you a better chance of burning off those calories. So in short, if you want to maintain a healthy weight or lose weight, your timing could make a big difference.

Could the timing of when you eat, be just as important as what you eat? | Brigham and Women's Hospital, EurekAlert via Time

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients | Psych ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on January 27, 2013

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients New research has found that qigong, an ancient Chinese mind-body practice, has been found to reduce depression and improve the quality of life in women undergoing radiation for breast cancer.

The study examined qigong in patients receiving radiation therapy and included a follow-up period to assess its benefits over time, according to researchers.

?We were [...] particularly interested to see if qigong would benefit patients experiencing depressive symptoms at the start of treatment,? said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., a professor in the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center?s Departments of General Oncology and Behavioral Science.

?It is important for cancer patients to manage stress because it can have a profoundly negative effect on biological systems and inflammatory profiles.?

For the study, Cohen and his colleagues recruited 96 women with stage 1-3 breast cancer from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China.

About half of the women ? 49 ? were randomly assigned to a qigong group consisting of five 40-minute classes each week during their five-to-six week course of radiation therapy. The remaining 47 women comprised a control group receiving standard care.

The program incorporated a modified version of Chinese medical qigong, which consisted of synchronizing one?s breath with various exercises, the researchers explained.

Participants in both groups completed assessments at the beginning, middle and end of radiation therapy and then one and three months later. Different aspects of quality of life were measured, including depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and overall quality of life.

According to the researchers, patients in the qigong group reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores beginning at the end of radiation therapy, with a mean score of 12.3, through the three month post-radiation follow-up with a score of 9.5. No changes were noted in the control group over time, the study found.

The study also found that qigong was especially helpful for women reporting high baseline depressive symptoms, Cohen said.

?We examined women?s depressive symptoms at the start of the study to see if women with higher levels would benefit more,? he said.

?In fact, women with low levels of depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy had good quality of life throughout treatment and three months later regardless of whether they were in the qigong or control group. However, women with high depressive symptoms in the control group reported the worst levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and overall quality of life that were significantly improved for the women in the qigong group.?

As the benefits of qigong were largely observed after treatment concluded, researchers suggest qigong may prevent a delayed symptom burden or expedite the recovery process, especially for women with elevated depressive symptoms at the start of radiation therapy. Cohen notes the delayed effect could be explained by the cumulative nature of the treatments, as the benefits often take time to be realized.

According to the researchers, the findings support other previously reported trials examining the benefits of qigong, but are too preliminary to offer clinical recommendations.

They note that additional research is needed to understand the possible biological mechanisms involved and further explore the use of qigong in ethnically diverse populations with different forms of cancer.

The study was published in the journal Cancer.

Caterpillar pessimistic on any demand increase for 2013

(Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc, the world's largest maker of construction equipment, posted a 55 percent drop in quarterly profit on Monday due to a charge connected with accounting fraud at a Chinese subsidiary and weak demand among its dealers.

Caterpillar's bulldozers, tractors and other machines have been accumulating in warehouses due to slowing economies in China, Europe and the United States.

The company said it was able to sell off some of this glut in the fourth quarter, reducing the value of its inventory from the third quarter by $2 billion. Inventory levels, however, remain $1 billion above year-ago levels, and executives expect 2013 to be a "tough year."

Adding to the company's troubles, quarterly results were hit by a charge of 87 cents per share after the company discovered accounting fraud at a Chinese coal mining supplier it bought last year.

In a somber note on the global economy, Caterpillar said the "most significant favorable factor" for 2013 profit will be the absence of the ERA accounting fraud writedown, not increased demand for its machines.

"We're encouraged by recent improvements in economic indicators, but remain cautious," Caterpillar Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said in a statement on Monday.

For the fourth quarter, the company posted net income of $697 million, or $1.04 per share, compared with $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.46 per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of $1.69 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Wall Street, however, appeared to look past the China accounting fraud mess, sending Caterpillar's shares up 2.1 percent to $97.62 in morning trading.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $16.08 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $16.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Caterpillar expects to earn $7 to $9 per share in 2013, below the $9.12 per share analysts expect.

CHINA FRAUD

Caterpillar closed the purchase of ERA Mining Machinery Ltd and its subsidiary Siwei, China's fourth-largest maker of hydraulic coal mine roof supports, last June, paying $653.4 million (HK$5.06 billion).

After the deal closed, Caterpillar found that physical inventory did not match accounting statements, a discovery that led to the charge. The case has opened questions about Caterpillar's research into ERA before the deal, as well as the adequacy of its auditors.

Caterpillar does not expect the fraud to harm its 2013 profit, but it will hinder the company's expansion into China, the world's largest coal producer.

Emory Williams, the chairman of ERA when the Caterpillar deal closed, ended days of silence on Monday, saying in a statement he was "dismayed" by the accounting charge Caterpillar was taking.

Williams said nothing about the accusation of accounting misconduct in his statement.

Citigroup Inc and law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP served as financial and legal advisers to Caterpillar on the transaction. Blackstone and DLA Piper acted as ERA's financial and legal advisers.

A source directly involved with the Caterpillar deal previously told Reuters that RSM Nelson Wheeler was ERA's auditor, while Deloitte and Ernst & Young acted on Caterpillar's side.

None of the auditors has commented.

Self Improvement Times: Is Relapse A Part Of An Addicts Recovery?

Is relapse part of recovery? This is one of the most common misconceptions out there about drug and alcohol treatment.

Relapse is not a part of recovery--at all.

People ask, "Is relapse part of recovery?" because they've heard someone say that it was for them. This usually happens in a group or at a meeting, usually in an effort to help ease the unwarranted shame of someone who recently went back out, failed to drink or use like a normal person, and came back to try to get clean and sober once again.

The worst part is, there is no shame in an addict or alcoholic going back out. That's what addicts and alcoholics do.

That's the thing, though: relapse is the exact opposite of recovery. If a person needs to go back out and test the waters again to be absolutely sure that they are an addict or alcoholic, then so be it. If that improves their chances of staying in recovery and gives them a better idea of where their disease will take them, then it is worth it.

However, no part of getting sober and then going back out and using or drinking has anything to do with recovery itself. There are plenty among us who stay clean and sober after our first meeting or group.

Relapse does not mean we throw in the towel and say "Oh well," and just languish in our disease thinking we are beyond hope.

Is relapse part of recovery? No, but it can be instrumental in attaining long-term recovery afterwards.

With the better understanding and full comprehension of how utterly doomed we are in the face of alcoholism and addiction, we have a hope of a better tomorrow. If we don't have that understanding, though, then it is likely that we will test the waters again. That is where the idea of relapse and recovery having a relationship has a minor twinge of validity.

Think about the last time you drank or used, and then recall the time directly before that. What was the difference between that last run and the run prior? Would you still be clean and sober if you hadn't had that last go of it?

We shouldn't confuse relapse as a part of recovery, though, because you can only learn from your experiences if you survive them. The worst part is that in many cases, addicts and alcoholics don't get that opportunity.

German lawmakers give Cameron qualified backing on EU

BERLIN (Reuters) - Britain is right to demand greater openness in the European Union but cannot expect to be accorded special rights that might unravel the bloc, senior members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition were quoted on Sunday as saying.

British Prime Minister David Cameron triggered dismay in many European capitals last week with his call for radical reform of the EU and his promise of an "in-out" referendum on Britain's membership by the end of 2017, provided he wins a second term.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, is keen to keep a kindred advocate of free trade and open markets inside the EU and has been more measured in its criticism while making clear there are limits to how far it can go in accommodating British concerns.

"It would be entirely wrong to respond to Prime Minister Cameron's overture with a kneejerk rejection," said Alexander Dobrindt, general secretary of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Bavarian sister party of Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU).

"Whoever condemns wholesale Cameron's idea for a national referendum on Europe fans distrust towards Europe, as if Europe must hide away from people," he told weekly Spiegel magazine.

Bavaria's Economy Minister Martin Zeil, of the liberal Free Democrats (FDP), junior partner in Merkel's coalition, also defended Cameron's speech, especially his call for measures to improve Europe's competitiveness.

Both the CSU and the FDP have become more critical of the European Union during the euro zone debt crisis amid concerns the currency area may turn into a 'transfer union' whereby richer countries such as Germany have to keep bailing out poorer neighbours.

But Dobrindt also signalled the limits of German patience.

"It is clear that in an optimal Europe there can be no place for special rights for individual countries," he said, adding that included Britain's cherished rebate negotiated in the 1980s that reduces its contribution to the EU's central budget.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle of the FDP said in an article for Die Welt newspaper there could be no far-reaching repatriation of EU competences to the national level as Cameron wants because it would wreck the single market.

"I fear that in so doing we would call up spirits which, like the sorcerer's apprentice in Goethe's poem, we would no longer be able to control," he wrote in an article which also endorsed British calls for more transparency in the EU.

Merkel, speaking in Chile during a summit of European and Latin American leaders, repeated her view that London and its European partners must seek a mutually acceptable compromise.

Merkel said she told Latin American leaders quizzing her about a possible British exit: "We, insofar as we represent here the whole EU, say quite unanimously that we wish Britain to stay in the EU."

Flooding And Homeowners Insurance Policies: Is Your House ...

Flooding And Homeowners Insurance Policies: Is Your House CoveredFlooding is a major peril with which many homeowners have to cope. No one is spared the risk of having their homes damage by flood.

Those living in areas that are not close to bodies of water are at as much risk as those who do. Storms, hurricanes, inadequate and blocked drainage systems as well as melting snow are all factors that contribute to flooding. A few inches of water in your home can leave you with a massive repair bill. Here?s what you should know about flood insurance.

Flood Insurance Policies

Unlike lightning and hurricanes, floods are not automatically covered under most homeowners? policies. This means that even those not living in flood prone areas need to seek additional coverage to protect them against the eventuality of suffering flood damage. Flood insurance is a specialized policy, and is the only form of coverage you can obtain as protection against certain losses associated with flooding. Flood insurance policies carry a 30-day waiting period. It is therefore in your best interest that you not wait until you learn of imminent flooding before trying to obtain coverage.

Water-related damages to the home are covered by two basic policies, which are the flood insurance policy and homeowner?s insurance policy. When you take out your homeowners insurance, ensure that you check to see what losses are not covered and use the other policy to cover those. The contents of your home are not automatically covered with the building. Homeowners should use one policy to balance the other in order to obtain maximum coverage.

Making a Wise Move

The added cost associated with flood insurance is relatively small compared to that which you would have to find out of pocket to deal with the damages. It is therefore not worth it to run the risk of not insuring yourself against what could be a watery catastrophe. You can obtain accurate shop homeowners insurance quotes from HomeownersInsurance.com so you have a fair idea how much it would cost to insure your home and possessions against flooding. Knowledge of the potential losses you could be exposed to if your home is flooded will help you to make an informed decision on whether one or both policies can adequately protect your home.

Life After Reality

Sadly, many homeowners in New York and New Jersey whose homes were affected by storm surges during hurricane Sandy are entitled to small sums that are woefully inadequate to cover the damages they sustained. Homeowners insurance would more than likely cover flood damage that is a direct result of the winds and water coming from the sky. Damages caused from flood surges would not qualify. Without added protection, and no real knowledge of the coverage stipulated for flood damages in their homeowners? policy, many homeowners now have to face the reality of life with little coverage. Many feel betrayed and that they have been left out in the cold. They now have to basically start over on very meager resources.

Congratulations, you survived the Mayan apocalypse. I knew you could do it.

I had complete confidence that I would live past the alleged planetary expiration date of December 21, 2012, provided I didn't get hit by a bus or slip in the bathtub. But those modes of demise are, of course, far less tantalizing than some end-of-the world fantasy dreamed up by amateur archaeologists and sucked down by people who perhaps never worry that they have undiagnosed hypertension or that the highway bridge they cross daily hasn't been properly maintained.

Toronto Mayor Ford Keeps Job, But Far from Vindicated ? The ...

Toronto mayor Rob Ford will apparently be keeping his job. An appeals court has overturned a previous court decision that had said that Ford had violated the province?s conflict of interest law.

The decision came down today from the Divisional Court which heard Ford?s appeal of his November conviction. The panel of three judges has now concluded that the original trial judge had made an error in finding Ford guilty under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.

Many Torontonians were bewildered by the original verdict, and by the fact that it could result (as required by the Act) in Ford?s removal from office and a multi-million dollar by-election. Ford?s offence, after all, was hardly armed robbery. He was merely accused of participating in a city council vote on a relatively small financial matter. The question under consideration at that vote was whether he, Ford, should return a few thousand dollars? worth of donations that the city?s integrity commissioner says were improperly gathered. So it?s not as if Ford had stolen the money, or embezzled it. And garnering the donations was not itself a legal offence. The problem lay solely in his having voted on this matter, a matter in which he had a personal stake. Many people wondered how it could be that Toronto could lose its duly elected mayor over such a small procedural matter.

But bewilderment about that initial verdict says more about public understanding of conflict of interest than it does about the substance of this case. Conflict of interest isn?t about numbers; it?s about loyalty. And when we think someone has violated a conflict of interest rule it?s not necessarily because we think he or she has made an improper decision, but rather that we think he or she has failed to keep personal business and official duties separate, and that as a result we cannot be sure about what factors may have influenced that decision. It is also, in the end, about public faith in the decision-making processes of our most important institutions.

Be that as it may, today?s decision means that Ford is not guilty of violating the Act, and hence gets to keep his job. My non-lawyer?s understanding of the verdict is this. The decision seems to turn on a technicality. Ford had been accused of wrongfully participating in a February 2012 debate and vote by Toronto city council over whether he, Ford, should return the improperly-gathered donations. A council vote 2 years earlier had required Ford to pay back that money. But, according to today?s ruling, Council didn?t have the authority to engage in that earlier vote. So it was legally null ? effectively, it never happened at all, from a legal point of view. And if the earlier vote ?didn?t happen,? then the February 2012 vote that essentially responded to that earlier vote was really moot. And if that vote was moot, it cannot have been improper for Ford to participate.

But the court?s decision today is far from a vindication. Ford keeps his job on a legal technicality, the sort of thing that a layperson could never foresee from a reading of the plain wording of the relatively brief and clear Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.

That?s fair enough, from a procedural point of view, but it doesn?t mean that the mayor didn?t do anything wrong. He still took part in a decision in which he had a personal stake. And as a man in a position of power and trust, he not only should not have done so, but he should have known better than to do so. Even if he knew in his heart that his vote in the matter was unbiased, he should have known that that?s beside the point. What matters is that trust in the system requires decision makers to remove themselves from decisions that pertain to their own affairs. Doing so is essential for maintaining public trust in the system.

We can only hope that Ford will proceed now with uncharacteristic humility, and with more eagerness to learn the rules that govern his position than he has thus far demonstrated.

Five die in Egypt violence on anniversary of uprising

CAIRO/ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Five people were shot dead in the Egyptian city of Suez during nationwide protests against President Mohamed Mursi on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

One of the dead was a member of the security forces, medics said. Another 280 civilians and 55 security personnel were injured, officials said, in demonstrations fuelled by anger at the president and his Islamist allies in the Muslim Brotherhood.

Thousands of opponents of Mursi massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square - the cradle of the revolt against Mubarak - to rekindle the demands of a revolution they say has been hijacked by Islamists who have betrayed its goals.

Street battles erupted in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said. Arsonists attacked at least two state-owned buildings as symbols of government were targeted. An office used by the Muslim Brotherhood's political party was also torched.

The January 25 anniversary laid bare the divide between the Islamists and their secular rivals.

This schism is hindering the efforts of Mursi, elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a plunge in Egypt's currency by enticing back investors and tourists.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians two years ago has given way to internal strife that had already triggered bloody street battles last month.

"Our revolution is continuing. We reject the domination of any party over this state. We say no to the Brotherhood state," Hamdeen Sabahy, a popular leftist leader, told Reuters.

The Brotherhood decided against mobilizing for the anniversary, wary of the scope for more conflict after December's violence, stoked by Mursi's decision to fast-track an Islamist-tinged constitution rejected by his opponents.

The Brotherhood denies accusations that it is seeking to dominate Egypt, labeling them a smear campaign by its rivals.

DEATH IN SUEZ

There were conflicting accounts of the lethal shooting in Suez. Some witnesses said security forces had opened fire in response to gunfire from masked men.

News of the deaths capped a day of violence which started in the early hours. Before dawn in Cairo, police battled protesters who threw petrol bombs and firecrackers as they approached a wall blocking access to government buildings near Tahrir Square.

Clouds of tear gas filled the air. At one point, riot police used one of the incendiaries thrown at them to set ablaze at least two tents erected by youths, a Reuters witness said.

Skirmishes between stone-throwing youths and the police continued in streets around the square into the day. Ambulances ferried away a steady stream of casualties.

Protesters echoed the chants of 2011's historic 18-day uprising. "The people want to bring down the regime," they chanted. "Leave! Leave! Leave!" chanted others as they marched towards the square.

"We are not here to celebrate but to force those in power to submit to the will of the people. Egypt now must never be like Egypt during Mubarak's rule," said Mohamed Fahmy, an activist.

There were similar scenes in Suez and Alexandria, where protesters and riot police clashed near local government offices. Black smoke billowed from tires set ablaze by youths.

In Cairo, police fired tear gas to disperse a few dozen protesters trying to remove barbed-wire barriers protecting the presidential palace, witnesses said. A few masked men got as far as the gates before they were beaten back.

Tear gas was also fired at protesters who tried to remove metal barriers outside the state television building.

Outside Cairo, protesters broke into the offices of provincial governors in Ismailia and Kafr el-Sheikh in the Nile Delta. A local government building was torched in the Nile Delta city of al-Mahalla al-Kubra.

BADIE CALLS FOR "PRACTICAL, SERIOUS COMPETITION"

With an eye on parliamentary elections likely to begin in April, the Brotherhood marked the anniversary with a charity drive across the nation. It plans to deliver medical aid to one million people and distribute affordable basic foodstuffs.

Writing in Al-Ahram, Egypt's flagship state-run daily, Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie said the country was in need of "practical, serious competition" to reform the corrupt state left by the Mubarak era.

"The differences of opinion and vision that Egypt is passing through is a characteristic at the core of transitions from dictatorship to democracy, and clearly expresses the variety of Egyptian culture," he wrote.

Mursi's opponents say he and his group are seeking to dominate the post-Mubarak order. They accuse him of showing some of the autocratic impulses of the deposed leader by, for example, driving through the new constitution last month.

"I am taking part in today's marches to reject the warped constitution, the 'Brotherhoodisation' of the state, the attack on the rule of law, and the disregard of the president and his government for the demands for social justice," Amr Hamzawy, a prominent liberal politician, wrote on his Twitter feed.

The Brotherhood says its rivals are failing to respect the rules of the new democracy that put the Islamists in the driving seat via free elections.

Six months into office, Mursi is also being held responsible for an economic crisis caused by two years of turmoil. The Egyptian pound has sunk to record lows against the dollar.

The parties that called for Friday's protests list demands including a complete overhaul of the constitution.

Critics say the constitution, which was approved in a referendum, offers inadequate protection for human rights, grants the president too many privileges and fails to curb the power of a military establishment supreme in the Mubarak era.

Mursi's supporters say enacting the constitution quickly was crucial to restoring stability needed for economic recovery.

India anti-rape protesters: Don't just get angry, do something

At a moment when many angry Indians are demanding that the rapists of a young woman who died this week be hung, one group encourages women to tackle social attitudes.

?I pledge to intervene when I see a woman being harassed,? read one slogan on signs held by both men and women on New Year's Day. Another sign held by a young woman read, ?I pledge to stare back.??

The ?Safe City Pledge? demonstrations were organized by?a collective called Blank Noise, which has been talking about sexual harassment in India for almost a decade now.

It is that long experience, says founder Jasmeen Patheja, that accounts for their unusual slogans. Amid the calls for better policing to prevent violent crime against women, the group wanted to also highlight how everyone contributes to ? and can thus help change ? a culture of sexism.

?It?s easy to blame the government and the police, but they also represent certain social mindsets, attitudes that we may be perpetuating,? Ms. Patheja says.

In recent weeks, some of those attitudes have been on display as political and civic leaders have faulted Westernization (read: sexual permissiveness) for violence against women.

On Friday, a leader from a Hindu nationalist party said that rapes ?happen in India, not Bharat? (the Hindi name for the country), while another suggested that women are being punished for ?crossing the line.? A survey from earlier this year showed that a fair chunk of both Indian men and women believed that wife beating was acceptable. ? ? ? ? ??

A younger, urban generation isn?t necessarily free from these attitudes either. ?We may all contribute to the problem in invisible ways,? Patheja says. ?When we say ?Boys will be boys,? or when we share sexist jokes or make mothers and sisters part of [curse words].?

One of the most common problems that Indian women face is harassment in public spaces.

?Eve teasing,? the lighthearted term used for everything from lewd comments to groping to stalking, is so routine that when Patheja started Blank Noise as part of a virtual project at Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore in 2003, she found few of her peers wanted to talk about it.

?There was a sense that it was just part of life, that there was nothing you could do about it,? she says. ? ? ? ? ???

Patheja and others started a blog to provide an anonymous space for women to share their experiences. They also began organizing public events. The idea was not to be an advocacy group, says Patheja, but to ?trigger a public dialogue that wasn?t didactic, through a series of approaches both blog-based and on-the-ground interventions.? Blank Noise also encouraged young women to confront street harassment in an effort to ?reclaim the city.?

That approach challenges the conventional idea that women should protect themselves by staying away from the public sphere, and a recent trend among the Indian middle-class to segregate themselves from chaotic urban environments through gated communities and private transport. Signs at Tuesday?s demonstration included pledges to ?use public transport even when private transport was available.?

Today, the Blank Noise project has a presence across nine cities, hundreds of volunteers and a large Facebook presence, though getting boots on the ground remains a challenge. More than 10,000 people were invited via Facebook to take part in Tuesday?s protest across the country.

In Mumbai, about 30 showed up. ?It?s easier to click ?like? and more difficult to get out on the street,? says Patheja. ?But we don?t worry much about that anymore. Even that one click means that someone has decided to engage.??

What is most important, she suggests, is the change she has seen in the past decade. Last month, the supreme court called for wide-ranging measures to curb harassment in public places.? ?There is now a greater willingness to talk about the issue,? she says, ?and less of an inclination to trivialize it.?

Qigong improves quality of life for breast cancer patients, study suggests

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have found qigong, an ancient mind-body practice, reduces depressive symptoms and improves quality of life in women undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer.

The study, published in the journal Cancer, is the first to examine qigong in patients actively receiving radiation therapy and include a follow-up period to assess benefits over time. Even though individual mind-body practices such as meditation and guided imagery appear to reduce aspects of distress and improve quality of life, questions remain about their effectiveness when conducted in conjunction with radiation therapy.

"We were also particularly interested to see if qigong would benefit patients experiencing depressive symptoms at the start of treatment," said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., professor in MD Anderson's Departments of General Oncology and Behavioral Science and director of the Integrative Medicine Program. "It is important for cancer patients to manage stress because it can have a profoundly negative effect on biological systems and inflammatory profiles."

For the trial, Cohen, the corresponding author, and his colleagues enrolled 96 women with stage 1-3 breast cancer from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China. Forty-nine patients were randomized to a qigong group consisting of five 40-minute classes each week during their five-to-six week course of radiation therapy, while 47 women comprised a waitlist control group receiving the standard of care.

The program incorporated a modified version of Chinese medical qigong consisting of synchronizing one's breath with various exercises. As a practice, qigong dates back more than 4,000 years when it was used across Asia to support spiritual health and prevent disease.

Participants in both groups completed assessments at the beginning, middle and end of radiation therapy and then one and three months later. Different aspects of quality of life were measured including depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances and overall quality of life.

Results show benefits emerged over time

Patients in the qigong group reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores beginning at the end of radiation therapy with a mean score of 12.3, through the three month post-radiation follow-up with a score of 9.5. No changes were noted in the control group over time.

The study also found qigong was especially helpful for women reporting high baseline depressive symptoms, Cohen said.

"We examined women's depressive symptoms at the start of the study to see if women with higher levels would benefit more," Cohen said. "In fact, women with low levels of depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy had good quality of life throughout treatment and three months later regardless of whether they were in the qigong or control group. However, women with high depressive symptoms in the control group reported the worst levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and overall quality of life that were significantly improved for the women in the qigong group."

As the benefits of qigong were largely observed after treatment concluded, researchers suggest qigong may prevent a delayed symptom burden, or expedite the recovery process especially for women with elevated depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy.

Cohen notes the delayed effect could be explained by the cumulative nature of these modalities, as the benefits often take time to be realized.

Future research needed

The authors note several limitations to the study, including the absence of an active control group making it difficult to rule out whether or not the effects of qigong were influenced by a patient's expectations or simply being a light exercise. Additionally, the homogeneity of the group, Chinese women at a single site, limits the ability of applying the results to other populations.

According to the authors, the findings support other previously reported trials examining qigong benefits, but are too preliminary to offer clinical recommendations. Additional work is needed to understand the possible biological mechanisms involved and further explore the use of qigong in ethnically diverse populations with different forms of disease.

Dell's Project Ophelia: Carry Your Computer in your Pocket ...

Dell wants to replace your desktop and laptop computers. The company has introduced a new computer that looks like a USB memory stick (also known as a flash drive).

Ophelia uses a Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) to draw power to boot from an HDTV display, or it can be powered off a USB port. It has integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability for connecting to a keyboard, a mouse, and the network, and it runs the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system with all of the functionality of a tablet. It can also be used to power virtual instances of other desktop operating systems on a remote server or in the cloud.

Dell_ophelia

You can see the Ophelia device in the above picture. It looks like a flash drive. The glasses are included simply to give a comparison showing the small size of the computer.

The following announcement was written by Dell:

LAS VEGAS ? Dell today unveiled a solution that extends the value of cloud client computing to the next level, enabling people to manage the increasing convergence of their work lives and personal lives by using a compact, portable device to access not only secured professional assets, but also personal content via the cloud. The ultra-compact multimedia-capable device, called Dell Wyse "Project Ophelia," is slightly larger than a USB memory stick and enables users to convert any capable TV or monitor into a functioning interactive personal display device without using a computer, tablet or smartphone.

Today, people are increasingly looking to take and securely access their personal and professional content wherever they go. Despite rapid advances in mobile technology, however, they still face challenges when it comes to securely accessing desired information when they are away from the office. There is no easy way, for example, to access photos, music or video from a personal cloud or entertainment subscription when away from a PC, smartphone or tablet. Equally, professionals find it difficult to securely access and share work applications, presentations and content if they are away from their usual devices, or worse, if their mobile devices are misplaced or fail during travel. It is also difficult for IT organizations to enable and manage access to enterprise apps and content for highly mobile users, especially those who may be without their preferred laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Built on Dell Wyse software technology already used on millions of devices, Project Ophelia transforms ordinary displays into a window to entertainment, communications and a person's own personal cloud. The device also allows business users to instantly turn a display into a flexible, securely managed, communications-enabled thin client for work, demos or presentations. These capabilities are packed into a device barely larger than a USB stick that is self-powered through a monitor and easily fits inside your pocket. The product addresses a variety of uses being fueled by the growing need to access cloud-based apps and resources at any time, or whenever a larger screen high definition digital display provides a superb user experience. Examples include:

  • Consumers who desire in-the-moment access to cloud-based games or content but do not have their laptop or tablet in their possession;
  • On-line gamers wishing to take advantage of a much larger display for an improved interactive experience;
  • Highly mobile professionals who may not have a large display capable device with them; and
  • Cloud access providers wishing to provide an attractively priced device included with carrier internet/wireless services
Key benefits of Project Ophelia:
  • Enables instant and secure access to your personal cloud, entertainment, work content and applications wherever there is an available capable display (using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse), including a wide variety of Dell flat-panel displays.
  • Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth facilitates access and communication.
  • Built on the Android 4 OS to support Web browsing, social networking, media playback and Android Apps with a possibility to extend to other services.
  • Securely connects to Windows desktops and applications running on back-end systems from all leading infrastructure providers including Citrix, Microsoft and VMware.
  • Flexibly powered zero-battery device gets power from the attached display monitor via its MHL interface to the monitor's MHL port, or separately via its own USB interface. No batteries to charge or change.
  • Remembers settings for each individual to enhance usability.
  • Compatible with many existing Dell Wyse thin clients and software products.
  • Managed by Dell Wyse Cloud Client Manager software-as-a-service (SaaS) which can ensure the device is being used by the appropriate person with the right permissions and access to apps and content based on role, department, and location.
Mobile devices have small screens, tablets and PCs aren't always convenient to haul around, and all these devices require batteries that can run down. 'Project Ophelia' turns capable TVs and monitors into personal and reliable Wi-Fi enabled work or entertainment stations ? all managed easily by IT via Dell Wyse Cloud Client Manager.

Availability:
Project Ophelia will be available in the first half of 2013 from Dell Cloud Client Computing.

Biden to promote gun control in pro-gun Virginia

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden is launching a White House campaign of road trips to promote gun control with a visit to Virginia, a state that has experienced its own school shooting tragedy yet maintains an avidly pro-gun tradition.

The White House announced Wednesday that Biden would travel to Richmond on Friday along with other Obama administration officials and Democratic Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine.

President Barack Obama said last week that he wants Congress to require background checks for all gun sales and ban both military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. The president conceded passage will be difficult, with support for gun ownership rights strong among lawmakers.

Biden headed the president's task force to study gun violence in the wake of last month's massacre of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. White House aides say Obama also plans to travel to push the issue, although his destinations have not yet been announced.

Virginia lawmakers have been debating a bill to require that private sellers conduct criminal background checks on buyers at gun shows. The current law only requires dealers to conduct the checks. Some of the survivors and families of victims of the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech that killed 32 have been leading the push for tighter gun control measures.

Gun shows are a frequent event around the Richmond area, and the Virginia General Assembly has been overwhelmingly supportive of gun ownership rights under both Democratic and Republican leadership.
