The Manatee County school board, Florida has passed a legislation to ban all energy drinks such as Red Bull, Rockstar and Full Throttle from schools across the county.

The school board's vote against energy drinks now places the drinks among similarly banned substances such as alcohol, cigarets and drugs.

According to researchers, energy drinks contain high quantities of sugar, caffeine and other unregulated additives that can pose dangers for children. Energy drinks have also been found to contribute to anxiety and depression in addition to interfering with medications.

High caffeine levels also affect blood pressure, brain function and heart rate.

Manatee County elementary schools director Joe Stokes said that a significant number of students who have increased energy followed by decreased energy can have agitation.

"Caffeine affects how the brain works," he added.

The ban will be imposed for the 2012-2013 school year and students caught with energy drinks could face suspension.
