Springfield
-
Wine merchant Gary Vaynerchuk's life made a dramatic change when he decided to make full use of the Internet for his business. In his book "Crush it! Why Now Is The Time To Cash In On Your Passion,"
he notes that he was "an anomaly of a guy with very limited technology skills."

Yet Vaynerchuk saw an opportunity for growth for his business by establishing a "personal brand" using the current social network sites like Face book, Twitter, etc. When this reporter caught up with him by phone he was commuting by plane to a business meeting. And, since the publication of his book, "Crush it," Vaynerchuk has kept a busy public speaking schedule.

The use of the Internet via the social networking platforms has helped Vaynerchuk immensely; so much so, his business in the past three years has more than doubled. He explained that all it really boils down to is relationships. How one builds a relationship with a client is crucial.

San Francisco realtor Rebecca White would agree because in a business like real estate it is all about relationship and trust. Like Vaynerchuk she has recognized the use of the Internet in business and its ability to connect to clients. "I am thinking of hiring an assistant just to help with keeping my Face Book page up-to-date," she said. White likes the "365 Things To Do in San Francisco" page on Face Book and has been trying to find more ways through use of the Internet to encourage more business. The balance is understanding what to present on the web to convey to one's clients. Should it it be strictly business material, only products and services? Or, can one present a bit more personality and friendliness?

Vaynerchuk's book provides some very simple ways to use the Internet to connect with clients and potential customers. Starting a blog, or posting up a page is good way to start. The possibilities are many. Vaynerchuk encourages business owners not to fear the new technology, just find a way to use it.

Because as he explained, no matter if things change in the particular web outreach, if the quality of the relationship is intact then that line of communication remains open, even if the platform changes or the person moves over to some other type of business. Most likely, that friendship or outreach will continue. This is true of many people in business and use of the Internet has made lines of communication more convenient. Internet technology has dramatically changed business, even ones like real estate where lots of paper work and contracts are requited.

Vernaychuk pointed out that before the Internet people in business communicated their transactions via fax machine or catalog. Now it is all on line. "In 1996, nobody was doing what I was doing," said Vernaychuk. He could see the wave of the future in the Internet as it was unfolding. "It was something intuitive that I knew was based upon a value to the customer," he said. Eager to point out that, he has always been able to handle high levels of risk when it has to do with something new or visionary. Vaynerchuk quickly clarified, I never do things that put my family or primary assets at risk."

"Mostly what I am investing in these is my time," he said. Vaynerchuck explained that really all these social network venues are is a new way to reach customers and build client relationships. "The relationships you establish if you invested your time, will remain with you. "They key is, Vaynerchuck said, is to make use of these platforms, venues, tools, properly in the proper context while they are relevant," he said. No doubt that as things change over time, the use of these social network sites will too. And, who knows what new technology or approach out there on the horizon? Vaynerchuk sees the Internet as a very revolutionary thing which has changed society dramatically, much like when the printing press was invented.

Yet no matter how much things may change, becoming more sophisticated or complex, most of all, said Vaynerchuk, "be yourself, be honest and keep it real."

Vaynerchuk noted how in just a short amount of time the Internet has gotten more savvy and offers more choices for a consumer. In his book, published in 2009, he talks about "passion is everything." Use the Internet and other venues to "tell a story" about your business. Or just say what you want to say to those you wish to connect with. "If I were to write "Crush it" today, yes there would be things I would do differently," he said. For one thing he wishes he had used You Tube more often instead of what he had been using to post up his video clips. Yet here again it is all about the willingness to give something new a try. "When I venture out into something new I go all out and I make note of where the chips fall in the gamble," noted Vaynerchuk. But again, he said that when one takes a risk it should only be mostly with one's time. Is the time invested helping to get closer to ones clients, customers or vendors? With regards to social networks and how much they are progressing, if he was to add something to "Crush it" today, it would be that "social networks are all different. They are not all in one bucket," he said. Recognize how each has a different style and way of communicating with its members." "Tell your story properly on that particular platform (or Internet venue)." he said. "Understand and recognize its particular style." He sees the Internet and use of social media as a way to build his business "empire" which is branching out into Vaynermedia. Books are only part of what he envisions. And so far, his writing has been well received. Vaynerchuk mentioned how vital it is for a business to understand how to get the message across properly within the framework of that particular social network site. For example, Twitter uses very short sentences to express thoughts and ideas. Yet Face Book uses pages. Face book lends itself to being both personal and business, whereas Linked In is more business orientated and its style reflects that. He also said that when using a particular social network site, pay attention to the timing, the length. For example, some sites are geared to have very short video clips, others allow for more extended clips and allow more space for more text. Pay close attention to how the message is received and what is the best way to keep the connection to ones clients going. Vaynerchuk is all for quality over quantity. Don't pay too much attention to how many "friends" or "followers" pay closer attention to the comments or how many orders your business receives. And, too the frequency in which customers place an order or ask questions about your products and services. While Vaynerchuk is pleased with the success he is enjoying he still believes in putting ones family and friends first. He values clients' needs and their trust more than a profit margin. And, most of all he sees passion as the key ingredient to success in any venture. "Crush It! - Why Now Is The Time to Cash In On Your Passion," published by Harper-Collins, New York was on the Bestseller list of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He has also written another book called, "The Thank You Economy." To learn more about Gary Vaynerchuk's wine business visit his wine library web site.
