N.H. Chick-fil-A manager to donate sandwiches to gay pride fest

The support from franchise operator Anthony Piccola for the New Hampshire Pride Fest comes as the restaurant chain continues to be criticized for an executive's comments about gay marriage.

By Associated Press / August 2, 2012

Customers gather by the hundreds outside the Gilbert, Ariz Chick-fil-A restaurant, on Aug. 1. Chick-fil-A supporters are packing the chicken chain's restaurants as the company continues to be criticized for an executive taking a public position against same-sex marriage. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared Wednesday 'Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.'

The support from franchise operator Anthony Piccola for the New Hampshire Pride Fest comes as the restaurant chain continues to be criticized for an executive's comments about gay marriage.

Piccola said Wednesday that the Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in its restaurants "is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect ? regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender." It followed a statement he made last week that said the Nashua restaurant at the Pheasant Lane Mall has gay employees and serves gay customers "with honor, dignity and respect."

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press last month that the Atlanta-based company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." That unleashed a flood of criticism from gay rights groups and others, who have called for boycotts and efforts to block the chain from opening new stores.

Opponents of the company's stance are planning "Kiss Mor Chiks" for Friday, when they are encouraging people of the same sex to show up at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country and kiss each other.

The New Hampshire festival emphasizing "Unity Through Community" is scheduled for Aug. 11 in Manchester's Veterans Park. It will feature a march, music and a family-friendly drag show.

Can I borrow from my retirement savings to buy real estate? - The ...

Can you borrow from an IRA, 401(k) or Roth IRA to invest in a rental property or a business? ? Bob H.

It can be tempting to borrow money from your retirement funds, but it's usually not a good idea, warns Frank deNapoli, senior vice president at Winslow, Evans & Crocker in Peabody, Mass. "You're shortchanging your retirement," he says.

Assets you take out of your nest egg will not have an opportunity to grow until you pay them back. That means you could be missing out on years of potential tax-deferred compound growth.

Most 401(k) plans allow loans, but borrowing is governed by strict rules. For example, you typically can't borrow more than $50,000 or 50% of the value of your 401(k). And you'll need to begin repaying that loan at your next pay period. If you're borrowing the money for most reasons, including to invest in a rental property or a business, you'll have up to five years to pay back the loan. (Loans to purchase a primary residence have longer payback periods, typically around 10 years.)

DeNapoli stresses that 401(k) loans should be an option of last resort. One reason: If you lose your job, you'll have to pay back the loan immediately or the IRS will treat it like an early distribution. That would trigger a 10% early withdrawal penalty in addition to income taxes.

As for IRAs, borrowing against them is prohibited except in self-directed IRAs. That type of account allows you to use your retirement assets as collateral for a loan on certain types of real estate. While this option poses fewer risks than borrowing from your 401(k), it's still dangerous: You're taking money out of your (presumably) diversified retirement portfolio to invest it in a single asset. "You're gambling your retirement assets on the real estate market," deNapoli says. "It could end in tears."

Home Theater System Installation: The Things Homeowners Have to ...

So, you're a whole family of movie buffs. You want to relive the viewing experience again and again, and all of you wish to be updated on the latest movies. At the same time, you wish to spend less on movie tickets, popcorn, and transportation costs, among several other expenditures. To satisfy this need to be entertained but save money, you can put in a customized home theater system in your home by following these 5 simple measures:

Strategic planning first

Before you obtain your own home theater system, consider a few questions: Does your San Diego property have enough space for a home theater system? Where should you place everything? Have you got adequate power outlets for all of the components?

Select your home theater system

Is your household content with watching movies just like how they view tv? Or do you intend to replicate the cinema-viewing feel inside the four walls of your house? Browse magazines, the Web, or the nearby store for home entertainment system models, and check their specs. It's also important that you've got a set budget.

Prep up the spot

If your system includes a projector, be sure it's away from the doors or windows. Similarly, a lot of light on the screen can ruin the viewing experience. Pick seating placements also; you can assemble the seats from scratch or invest in cozy seats for the complete family. Moreover, the audio system must be strategically positioned so that the sound will be uniformly distributed all over the room. A superb place will be on both sides of the screen.

Assemble

If you want extra room to fit the components for the home theater San Diego residents want, you can cautiously cut out certain parts of the wall. You may even build spaces for the appliances out of wood. Be sure the wire connections are properly and logically placed around the area. To add in style to your home theater, add some finishing touches using paint.

Set up everything

In this phase, you'll now see if the space you developed for your San Diego home theater system works. Examine whether the wires sufficiently get to the power outlets. Have your whole family test your built-in theater system for comfort and convenience. Interview them for comments concerning the position of the equipment, the lighting, the seats, and so on.

It's fairly simple to install a home theater system. However, if you want a more professional feel, you could seek the advice of contractors that assemble the home theater installation San Diego residents prefer. After all, your end goal is to sit back, relax, and enjoy the movie. AP PHOTOS: Scenes from massive Indian power outage

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Stranded passengers, commuters on dark streets, people making food over campfires.

The massive electric grid collapse in India swept people back to the dark ages. The cascading power outage cut power to 620 million people in the world's largest blackout before the lights started coming back on again.

While Indians were furious and embarrassed, many took the crisis in stride, inured by the constant ? though far less widespread ? outages triggered by the huge electricity deficit stymieing the development of this would-be Asian power.
